New Designer Diary: With Great Power...

By FFG_Sam Stewart, in Rogue Trader

Hello, Rogue Trade r fans!

This week, we take a look at some of the ways Rogue Trade r will differ from other roleplaying games in both the scale and scope of the game .

Enjoy!

Did anyone else read this and just go, "well... ya, that's why I want the game"?

Only every other time a Designer Diaary has been posted...

I would like to applaud the designers of this game for writing a concise summary of the game's theme in this developer diary that the entire book reflects, through and through . They most definitely put their Profit Factor where their mouth was on this one, and the quality of the effort shows.

A very nice piece that really shows what the game will be about and the true scale of the W40K universe.

Now if I could just get my hands on a copy ......

Since the reveal of the Explorator career path.

On a less snide note, this dev diary does explain something I had trouble describing to my players (who are not particularly familiar with the setting,) that the 40k universe is big; really, really, REALLY big. That it's so mindbogglingly big that it requires a minor suspension of disbelief in order to take it all in. And in that ridiculously big universe the PCs have access to a rare set of political powers...

Looking at how big the galaxy is, I don't have any problems with the size of anything in 40k.

Oh yeah. That prity much summed it up. If I hadn't already ordered it, I would have after reading this.

And the point was that my players had no concept of what the scale of 40k is. When asked about the size of the Sovereign Venture, my RT player asked if it was the same size as the Serenity (of Firefly fame.) And the size of the galaxy has nothing to do with the ridiculous scale of many things in the Imperium, the problem I was lamenting is lacking a good reference to my players other then that 40k is "A setting where everything is done in ridiculously huge proportions that are often a horribly inefficent waste of resources but that's okay because 'Rule by the cool' makes everything work out in the end."

Course, my group had trouble handling D&D "epic" so there are probably other problems at foot here. At least this Dev Diary corrects one of my outstanding issues.

I hate the waiting. Me wants my Collectors Edition now! sad.gif

I'm keeping my expectations muted on this one. Commanding big ships doesn't impress me (I grew up with Traveller ) and the Profit Factor isn't a revolutionary new mechanic (ever played D20 Modern ?). The background-based character generation is nice, but also a little Traveller -ish and ship design resembles a less-technical GURPS system.

So basically I'm buying Rogue Trader out of brand loyalty and a desire for completeness, rather than any great sense of anticipation. I'm sure something in there will be absolutely blow-your-mind impressive, I just haven't seen it yet.

Perhaps a wise choice although it's a bit late for me. Eh, I am familiar with your comments. Wealth was screwy but understandable and kept much of the more complex notions of banking, interest, and credit scores from bogging down the game. Profit Factor is only slightly unique in that it was made to work on a scale Modern PCs would barely be able to dream of. Can't really say much on the space ships (everyone commands big ships at some point.)

Personally, I like the opprotunity to have something similar to the scope of Traveller without those character gen rules (they're great and exceptionally comprehensive, but complicated; probably enough to disinterest my group) and with rules I can convert to another setting if I feel up for it. Other then that, I understand your apprehension.
