@dormouse: i apologize for that earlier sentiment man -- i didn't mean to be insulting, and i'm sorry for coming off that way. occasionally i post to make as strong a statement as possible so that the various arguments get everyone's attention, then get supported and refuted by others on through a thread, thus allowing me not to have to post again 'cause i'm usually too uncaring to post on a topic twice, haha. (this thread being an example.) sorry again for that!

Once more. Given that the actual wording will be printe on the card, melee champion has the text "No attachments except weapon :" There is exactly one negative attachment in the whole LCG enviroment which is also a weapon - fishing net from the song of summer chapter pack. Also please take into consideration how many direct kills can be found in the LCG enviroment, that work nearly without requirements just like e.g. Arya´s revenge or flame-kissed. Of course there are enough cards in total to deal with a 3 strength knight , any kneel effect would also solve the problem for a round. But one of the good things in LCG is (in my opinion) that there are less immediate direct kills.
I guess that would depend on how you interpret 'target of a negative attachment.' I've been known on a number of occasions to put War Scorpion on my opponents characters, and Icy Catapult is a wonderful example of an attachment with a negative effect that can hit Melee Champion, of course that is really moving around your point and on to the new one that the card has limited protection (which also does wonder of keeping him from gaining any new benefits that would make him harder to kill and easier for him to win challenges) and there are other effects that can get rid of him.
I agree.
Besides i was a little bored and picked out all the LCG enviroment cards with those crossfire effects i mentioned before. Some of them like Seawater Scalawags, winterfell reserves are a minor issue, others like Chella, Shadowstalker, Flaming Pitch tower, Veteran marauder, war horn & wintertime marauders can be really annoying. All the listedcards have in common, that an effect is triggered after a challenge and neither cards of the losing player nor cards of the winning player must be chosen as a target for the effect.
So here´s the list:
Winterfell reserves
Chella, daughter of Cheyk
Veteran marauder
Godswood attendant
Seawater scalawags
Flaming-Pitch tower
To be a lion
To be a viper
Carrion bird
War horn
Shadow stalker
Wintertime Marauders
Theon Greyjoy
City watch
Cersei Lannister (time of trials)
Tywin Lannister (tower of the hand)
Jaime Lannister (tower of the hand)

That´s half the truth. It´s not just safely ignoring the opponents, but the possibilities they bring along to influence the game. And these possibilities are far too hand-tight for my taste. Dormouse mentioned that in a game of diplomacy he´will try to bribe my neigbhour countries to do some action on the land i´m leading in the game. AGOT melee is different because you do both, bribe other opponents and send your own troops, as well use some events, charachter abilities etc. to intervene, which is in my book far too much for a half way regulated game play and too much for any tactic to suceed. I wouldn´t go to far to say that it ain´t fun playig a melee every now an than, but it just ain´t my favorite choice, i would rather prefer a startegical board game over AGOT melee e.g. the AGOT board game.
All I can say when reading this is that Old Ben should travel to California where some of the AGoT melee games I have seen and participated in have been the about the most fun I can imagine a card game being. The melee final table at Cali Con 2008 was Epic in ways no 1v1 joust or typical CCG championship match could ever be.
THen again for Threat from the East Bay Melee was 50-65% of all the games we played, possibly more. If you are getting attacked every turn in AGoT Melee by every player, something is very wrong. If you aren't worrying about every other country in Diplomacy something is very wrong.
