How are you liking wave1 rebels?

By Blail Blerg, in Star Wars: Armada

I've only bought Imperial stuff so far, but a funny thread i heard someone talking about their rebel ship as a "goldfish" makes me think i might want some rebel stuff so my friends and i can at least play a fun game in our homes.

What do you like rebel wise? What do you recommend? Why do you like what you like?

Also: I'm not super thrilled about fighters, so I'd probably only get them if they're really good/core to good Rebel building. (Some X-wing fat han irritation leaking through here.)

I'm liking the idea of owning wave 1 rebels when it gets relesed here in OZ does that count

I'd recommend at least one rebel fighter pack. With it you get access to tools that the Rebels kind of need to cover different situations and augment the four X-Wing squadrons you get in the starter pack. A-Wings are great interceptors, Y-Wings are more capable bombers, and B-Wings do better close-support for your capital ships than any of the others. You also get Wedge to combine with Luke for awesome Acitude.

And I'm not sure if this helps, but in this game all fighers have turrets. Facing only matters for the big ships here, and even though they fire in all directions they are only allowed 2 attacks out of arc (with different powers!)

For the Rebels they are the lighter, more reactive force. The more I think about the Nebulon-B and it's particular strengths the more I think it, like the CR90, are intended to be run at high speeds to try outmaneuvering the Empire. Both are great at flanking, but the CR90 is better at evasion because Imperials cannot catch speed 4 ships that blow past them in one turn, going from one arc to another in one movement. As the rebels are smaller and cheaper they can afford to spend on more ships, better upgrades, or better commanders.

Your craft by virtue of having lower command values are easier to change orders with, so you can react if your plan is not going well. The Empire has to play methodically because of their high command limits on their ships... until the Raider gets here, once the Emprie commits to a plan they have to see it through.

Rebel fighters and aces are not as deadly as their Imperial counterparts but they are more forgiving. If your opponent has light starfighter cover your fighters won't disappoint if you set your strike craft on capital ships. Rebel fighters also need to be tag-teamed by the enemy in order to defeat while Rebel starfighters can one shot Fighters and Interceptors very easily. The aces aren't as fantastic at killing enemy starfighters as the Empire are, but you have one pilot whom ignores shields entirely and another one that can lock an enemy starfighter out of attacking that turn.

Were I to build a Rebel list, I would want one that takes advantage of the high mobility and fantastic flanking ability of the CR-90. I think it is my favorite rebel craft because of the ability to blow in quickly and rocket by the ponderous Imperial ships. I'd get a lot of satisfaction of timing activations just right so the Victories are caught flat-footed as my preposterous corvette, parked in front of a Victory, fires first and then blows past it into a rear arc to get away from reprisal.

I don't like Nebulons that much but one thing they excel at is being cheap starfighter swatters. We don't know how expensive the Raider is, but the Escort frigates are five points cheaper than the next ship with two dice for anti-fighter coverage. And unlike the Gladiator, when you activate those generous side-arcs you are not normally sacrificing a powerful anti-capital attack to swat the space bugs. With the extra points left over plus one you can mount some X17s to make some decent use out of the three reds out of the front.

I haven't had the chance to push an Assault frigate around on a table yet but what I see, I like. The firepower is pretty good, as is the protection, and the two variants available present good options depending on how you build your fleet. The A verison is for a ship-heavy fleet by giving you some of the best AA coverage so far and the B version frees up points so you can take more starfighters (at the expense of the AA protection). I think the rebels need this, If for no other reason than as a survivable target that draws VSDs to it while the flankers do what they do best. VSDs can ignore corvettes for a while, but not an Assault Frigate.

So whereas one can see the Imperials as ponderous, predictable, and sluggish the Rebels can be seen as quick and reactive fighters that don't bring bulk to the table but make up with versatility, adaptability, and speed.

Wish I would have been able to buy ANY-BLOODY-thing wave 1...

(next week I hope...)

The Rebels have more diversity than the Empire, because you have 3 Capitals and two of them are cheaper than the Imperial's ships. Lists are now being built at 300 points.

The lists I like are:

5 Corvettes with some A-Wings(Mama's '55 Vette)

One of each ship seasoned to taste.

Two Mark II's to slug it out with the Victory Class(Whale Tailin')

or the Yavaris & Gallant Haven Combo with 100 points of Squadrons.

the x17 lasers make killing Victories far easier and I love them :D

AFmk2-A Paragon and Neb-b Salvation throw out near Victory levels of damage (though only Paragon gets the dice, Salvation just doubles the damage of every crit result)

Havn't even played with my wave one stuff yet. Hope today we can throw down some games. I feel just by my read through though, I will be happy.

Neb B and Yavaris can be pretty deadly if get your fighters into a spot where they can attack twice.

I nearly took out a GSD with 2 X-Wings, thanks to Yavaris and the Most Wanted mission. The two X's threw 8 dice at it, and since it's 2 dice per things like brace or redirect do little good. It helped greatly that my dice were very hot, and landed 7 hits out of 8 dice.

Can pair that up with Adar to get another attack still.

I'm thinking the Support refit Neb makes more sense with Salvation then the Escort does. The only thing you really lose is 1 anti-fighter die, but it's 6 points cheaper, which nearly pays for the title.

Really digging the Assault Frigate with Enhanced Armament. 4 Red 1 Blue die for 10 points? Yes please!

Salvation with X17 can be so freaking deadly, especially when you toss in a duo Gunnery Command/Token. Loving my Rebels from Wave 1, and I'm not even using a Space Guppy.

I think everyone knows what I think.

I have ruined my reputation here! I better flee to reddit!

"Noooooooooo!"

Hello, I'm wanting to get into Rebels because I want to be different in an empire heavy area. I know I'll be facing Victory heavy lists with high possibility of Vader and Soonter. With that said what would be some smart buys to go against those kinds of lists? I'm already considering a fighter pack and an assault frigate. But if by chance I cannot get an assault frigate what would be some good shoe ins for it? Corvettes?

might've said this already, but the Afmk2 is the easiest ship (imo) to learn the game with. It has no glaring weaknesses (poor, long nebs :() and can at least not die horribly even if it doesn't do enough damage to kill a vic

with it and the new Neb titles and the x17s and the new squadrons, any well put-together rebel list should have an easier time of taking down a Victory than back in ye olden days of the core set. So really, anything should work. The afmk2s are simply the most durable of the new options, and easily the most forgiving. I'd start with one/two and some fighter packs.

Assault Frigate. Nuff said.

The Salvation title on a Nebulon-B with X-17 Turbolasers gunned down my Gladiator in 2 turns with concentrate fire last game. I already respect that ship more then any other now. Grab a Neb B if no assault frigate available and 2 fighter packs. The Neb-B expansion is a good buy making that ship a versatile choice.

The Assault Frigate can play any roll, but its advanced deflector shields really let it shine if you plan on taking heavy fire. However, havn't found this ships niche in my fleet yet, but that will come with more games. It really is a ship that excels at nothing, but is also decent at most jobs. Versatility is probably the best role it plays.

I managed to get a lot out of 6 flights of B-wings when combined with Yavaris and Gallant Haven. Between the two I managed to destroy 4 flights of Interceptors and 4 flights of Ties, and still had enough time left to drop a 5 damage bomb on a Gladiator between two flights. I had to use a lot of Squadron commands to get these guys into position, but it was well worth it. Ended the game with 2 flights left over. Short of its speed it has performed well when you plan for them.

Thanks guys, I like all those options. Sounds like I can't really go wrong because of the versatility of the ships. What are our best fighters? I'm seeing a lot of people using B-Wings and some swear to the Y-Wing for being the best bomber option, which is fine by me as the Y-Wing is my favorite rebel fighter.

if you use gallant haven, it almost doesn't matter which you squadrons you have :P

people are swearing up and down for the A-wing and it's easy to see why. Black die (no bomber) gives you a 75% chance of dealing one non-crit damage to a cap ship per a-wing, 3 blue dice are kinda crappy when tie fighters have that and swarm, but those dice are supplemented by counter 2 and an amazing speed 5 (plus fairly chunky four health). Can't really argue with them there.

I still fly six X-wings with my two fatties and I haven't had any reason to complain :)

need to try out our dedicated bombers, though

The Space Whale is my new Best Friend. It can stand up to a VSD and has changed the game as a whole. (For the better of course.)

I will get the rest of the Wave this Friday (FFG ninja'd in Wave 1 under the radar so I had to wait a week to get it all.) so then I will be able to give a better report. But I even ordered all of the Empire stuff and need to try them out too.

So much goodness.

I just picked mine up. So if you don't have them they are close.

Is the Salvation title on the Neb B in the expansion or in the starter box?

Sounds like Salvation is a must-get. Im assuming its the Neb B expo. Cuz i dont have one from the core.

Okay, the Assault Frigate Mk2 is the "whale" or "guppy" looking one right? I think goldfish or guppy is funnier.

ONE OR TWO GUPPIES? Guys help. =P

I'm thinking of just getting one for casual games, is a list with 2 guppies really that good or fun?

Wish I would have been able to buy ANY-BLOODY-thing wave 1...

(next week I hope...)

Once tournaments go up to 400 points I don't see two guppies being a bad idea, maybe even escorting an MC80. Ackbar is going to love having them as part of his flotilla.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about these Nebulons. Just bought one today. I don't have much of a fleet but I'm willing to try leaning on the Salvation title for one of my ships. Yes Blerg, Salvation is in the expansion.

At 400pts I will be fielding several MC30's because they are small ships with high shields and are going to likely be maneuverable like a Nebulon-B

400 points gives me room for...another fattie :D

or maybe 5 nebs

idk, I'm going to be satisfied with wave 1 for a good time to come
