Range is not distance - two separate measures.

Actualy he uses both sides. When moving, he uses the distance side, when firing he uses the range side.

Lack of the keyword "other" allows him to benefit from his own ability, if it had the phrasing "other friendly squadrons at range 1" it would be a different story.

Can I just check, since he says they can use all their bombardment dice does that mean you can use the black dice at medium range. Presuming yes.
