Does the Assault Frigate Mk 2 look good or bad?

By JBar, in Star Wars: Armada

Yeah, that's the problem with black&white. I tried to break this impression with the warm beige on the backside.

Here's a mock up I just threw together for fun.

I just painted mine Orca-alike, it looks more fearsome then you'd imagine. When I've finished the touchups, I'll gonna post it.

Please do!

Done.

That improves the ship immensely.

Now I want to see a whole fleet with assault frigates painted like this, home one painted like a blue whale, the mc30 painted like, maybe, a humpback or something.

Assault Potato is cool ship. Had fun playing with them in EaW

Hmmmm.... I think the MC30's would be more like sharks.

Maybe. I was trying to keep it in the cetacean family, but I'm not all that sure about how large the assorted rebel ships are. Is the MC30 significantly smaller than the assault frigate?

A dolphin might be appropriate.

A dolphin might be appropriate.

I thought about that. But although dolphins are very capable fighters and can be quite vicious, they have a reputation as cute and kind and lovable. Not sure you want give that connotation to your warships.

**** yeah you do!

if the enemy engages with the imagine of a cute little clicklickclick dolphin who's just happy to be there, he'll be more likely to allow enhanced armaments paragon to hit him in the face :P

Did anyone else see the Assault Frigate and think the Reaver ship from the premiere of Firefly?

you going to inspire folks to hang corpses off the prow of this otherwise button-nosed little vessel?

Good Good. Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

Oh **** - Cannot unsee!

I like it even tho it has adopted the name Big F@%king Dolphin or BFD for short. I'm happy they are not sticking to ships you only see on the big screen, Imps and Rebs.

Here's my gripe with the way the Space Guppy looks. I honestly don't mind the head of the thing too much, it's a little too bubbly looking, but it's not terrible. I don't mind the single engine in back, or even the fins. I don't love them, but I can live with them. What I mind, very simply, is it is missing its middle. It's like the designer made this prodigious bulbuous head, design a somewhat undersized rear section, and then the boss can in and said "I need the finished design now" while he was sketching a mid section, so he just squeezed everything together, and skipped the middle. Put a simple middle like the Neb Frigate has, and I wouldn't hate the Space Guppy so much, but as is I will just pass on it and await the Mon Cal Star Cruiser for a ship of the line.

What's wrong with it? It looks like the pictures. Don't blame FFG for

Being accurate. Man it's just constant griping about this game. This paint job is bad, I don't like how this ship works, bombers are too fast. I have fun with this game, I think the models look good and the frigate is nice.

The most effective shape to design a spaceship where as many guns can hit a given target is a sphere. However, once you add engines the design of the ship starts to change.

Design factors such as the basic function, ability to enter atmosphere and position and location of thrusters all make an impact on the way a ship will end up looking.

When it comes to warships, real or imaginary: Looking good is not even on the table.

The design of the Star Destroyer is by the nature of its combat role very much indicative of the faith the Emperor has in his fleet command. Anything more complicated than fly at them and shoot is too complicated. No wonder in the movies the Star Destroyers are crashing into each other, you fly at the enemy and formations are way too hard.

Now, if you were designing a ship to fight that, without playing a game of “super chicken” you actually want to build a shape that puts as much fire power to the sides. A cigar shaped ship isn’t too bad here as you can roll to turn away the damage from the ship shooting. However, by squishing the cigar you end up having a good amount of guns firing forward (the forward portion of the ship will resemble a sphere) in addition to the broadsides.

All in all the Assault Frigate is a good design for its task.

Are you Frakking serious? The topic's title is "MkII looks good or bad" the entire topic is devoted to the subjective idea of whether or not we think the AssFrigate looks good or bad, so how can you seriously come on to the topic of the aesthetic appeal of the MkII and complain when those like myself who think it looks Fugly state that it looks Fugly? That makes as much sense as going into a topic titled "is Dutch good or bad", and then chewing out the people that have an opinion that differs from you as being too negative.

I dislike it. there is not much about it that I do like, but the thing I dislike the most is one single engine. No other large warship is configured this way. most ships this size have clusters of engines.

I actually do like the look of the ship except for that single thruster bit. The Corvette has 8, the Neb-B has 7, all the fighters, even the TIEs, have 2 or more (obviously since that is what the acronym stands for). I'm just not convinced that that thing is a fast moving ship with one thruster. Anyway, that aside I actually like the look of it and I think it fits well into the overall Star Wars aesthetic as does the Gladiator.

I strongly disagree. A sphere can, if the guns are even distributed, aim a maximum of 50% its guns at a given target. A wedge like the Star Destroyers can aim all guns at a target in the front it has, except the rear guns. At targets above, below or at the left and right it can aim aproximately 50% of its guns (except rear...), and at targets perpendicular to the inclined hull platings it still can aim 25% of its guns (...rear). Only the rear arc is severely undergunned. As an attackship, the Star Destroyers (would) perform much better than a sphere. Now considering the significantly smaller silhouette, a wedge is way harder to hit.

For broadsides, the SD is as good as a sphere while being way better at "super-chicken" - but it isn't nearly as good in rotating out of harms way as a cigar.

I'm sorry, but this idiot is in the wrong here. You don't start a thread asking if people like or dislike the look of an item, and then condemn people for answering. The thread wasn't "why the Soace Guppy is the prettiest bulbous one engined starship ever designed" it was "I like its looks, others don't, what do you think?" It wasn't even "I'm building a list to win, here it is" followed by responses of "it's too fugly to be viable, I hate it and I hate FFG for ever building it!" If you don't want to see people answering a question you disagree with, in a thread asking people to either agree or disagree with an OPINION, then don't open the thread!
