Does the Assault Frigate Mk 2 look good or bad?

By JBar, in Star Wars: Armada

I find the MK II pretty ugly...the way it just....vanishes in the back is too weird for me...it should have more superstructure or something in the back. I just looked at the MK 1 and I think it looks much better and would "fit" better in with the other 2 ships we have.

If you accept the Assault Frigate as the line-fighter of the Rebellion, the Nebulon-B becomes more of a cheap fighter-swatter and cheap gun platform. You take the support version with your favorite turbolaser for long-range shots and the escort version to solve any fighter problems while Assault Frigates trade blows with VSDs.

I don't know, after taking Salvation to the field with X-17s I think Nebs can easily stack enough fire to terrify a Victory. The side arcs are the only problem, mostly against Victory-2s.

still need to see how all ships interact with the Gladiators, though

It is FUGLY! The Space Guppy is the worst looking ship I've ever seen plopped out of a Star Wars design.

Nebulons will work as long as they are facing the enemy... that narrow-cross section should not deviate enough to let, say, a forward Victory arc fire into the side. The nebulon is going to face (and perhaps inevitably ram) whatever it is it's shooting at unless it's target is headed away from the frigate.

The problem I see with the Nebulons are wide side arcs , at 1 shield each, with no redirects. To me this is a tremendous liability to the craft that, in my mind, takes it out of the running as something to build a list around. You'll only be strong as long as your front angle is pointed at the enemy, and all it takes is one raking Gladiator or Victory coming perpendicular to another Victory to start chewing these apart.

The only saving grace is the half damage redundancy. The ship can forestall some amount of damage but it would be better still to provide some protection from the stronger front-back shields to take away some of the damage. All that needs to happen after all are enough accuracy results to lock down fresh defense tokens.

Ever since I first played EaW, I can't help but laugh at this thing. Let's face it; it looks ridiculous.
But I don't dislike it, to say the least. The Rebel capital ships look nice and round, while the Imperial ships are angular and pointy.

Those that played Star Wars Empire at War may recognize it and like it. For those in which this is the first time they saw it probably won't like it that much.

I think those who know of the Mk1 will dislike the 2. The ones who don't know either can go either way.

I'll give you that. It's a much cooler design. But too similar to the Dreadnaught.

Funny thing is that the Dreadnaught is in the Decipher card game but not Empire at War.

I took to the rear end of it with a saw and some plastic card. I like the look better now. I just use this one as the MkII B

I saw a fan made Mk1 and Compared to the Mk2 I would take the Mk2. I just looks better in my eyes.

I took a closer look at the Assault Frigate today and what it reminds me of is Audry the carnivorous plant from the movie Little Shop of Horrors.

My question: how is the space whale so fast with just one tiny engine?

ok i must have weird taste because i kinda like the ship, granted that lonely engine looks off on a ship this size but i like the overall look of the ship

I hated it to start with, but to be honest, it's growing on me.

I hate it, - although you can get used to the 'look' - the biggest galling and most thing is when you compared it to the VSD, it's faster and more manoeuvrable in game but has one tiny engine compared to the VSD's huge impressive engine block.

I love it.

I think the proportions are the main problem. Make it smaller overall, elongate the hull and it would probably be fine. Widen and shorten the thruster assembly and add recessed sub assemblies inside and it would look like it had the engine power without being too similar to Mon Cal or Imperial configurations.

As it stands I'm with Coastctyo- Nebulon B's and Corvettes can handle it. Fortune favours the bold after all.

I'm thinking that I might try having my Nebulon B's stay on target and then overshoot on purpose and scarper. The B-Wings in their wake will deal with finishing off the capital ships. Theoretically.

I started off quite liking the look of it when I first saw the pictures up on the FFG website. Now I've got one I think it actually looks great. It's nice and chunky while maintaining some nice curves. The fins are cool as well giving it that whole 'fish in space' feel. The only real down side, IMHO, is the rear of the ship. It needed a couple more engines and some more large fins in my opinion. It's certainly going to form the core of my Rebel fleet until wave 2 comes out as it leands itself well to the 'ragtag' look I think the Rebel side should always be looking for.

I love the ship, but agree more engine bells would look good. I have also considered removing the bottom sensor array fin. Something about the curved flight stand.

It looks like the illegitimate love child it is: Incubate a combination of crummy resources plus deadly necessity in a Mon Cal ship yard. Congratulations! It's a 23 pound Orca-Frog-Guppy. Mama took one look at the bambino, and died.

Oddly, this is what I love about it. There are just enough similarities with other Mon Cal designs. These make it appear Mon Cal inspired. But it was clearly "conceived" in desperation, as a conglomeration of pre-existing components. Or did I already say that?

Regardless, a group of Quarren pirates should adopt these as their flagships. Paint them up like Orcas. Name them terrifying things like Rip-Tide, Tsunami, and Great Abyss. Then -- as their prey collapses to the deck, convulsing in laughter at the not-so-fearsome appearance -- blast the enemy out of the stars.

I just painted mine Orca-alike, it looks more fearsome then you'd imagine. When I've finished the touchups, I'll gonna post it.
