Ok, you can't call the Assault Frigate a Space Whale. That name belongs to another ship in FFG's Star Wars line up, X-Wing's own Alabaster Space Whale, the Lambda Shuttle.

Personally I've seen it as a frog, but now a koi do to the efforts of others.

However, I think I'm sticking to calling it an Assault Frogate.

Originally I was disappointed that they went with the Mark 2 over some of the Mark 1 configurations. But the design has grown on me (maybe like the plague?). It is currently my favorite rebel ship by capabilities, and I am dang tempted to paint some teeth on one of them.

I'm seriously considering airbrushing one black and white and putting on a military model A-10 Warthog teeth decal so it looks like an orca.

I personally like it. Fits in with the Rebels thematically, like a Mon Cal crossed with a Neb.

First glance of the Assualt frigate was when I was looking at Empire at War. "That can't be an assault frigate, what are they doing? It's missing half the mass if it's claiming to be a Dreadnought derivative". The little tiny one-bell engine seemed pretty comical.

I find I'm more accepting of the design now but I wish it had more changes. Like others I'll probably be painting mine in garish color schemes to make it more visually interesting.

As for performance, the rebels need it. It's takes foolishness or craftiness to stick only with Nebulons and Corvettes- light ships- to go toe to toe with a Destroyer heavy force. The Assault Frigate offers bigger guns and better protection so they can match the Empire on more even terms.

Was the Mk 2 in Star Wars: Rebellion? I know I'm partial to the Mk 1 due to that game (and the Roleplaying game from way back)...

I don't really care for it. Its not the worst thing in the world, but it just looks.. off. It's almost like it was a smaller ship that got blown up in size. Something of that shape being about as big as the VSD just seems like such a weird design.

When I first saw the Wave 1 announcement I'll admit I thought "what the hell is that thing," as I'm not well-versed in the EU. However in the lull between the core set and Wave 1's release and my lack of people to play with, I bought Empire at War to help sate my sizable craving for Star Wars space ship battles. I must say... I still think it looks as goofy in the original video game it came from as I did when I first saw it.

I'm also kinda surprised reading that the majority of people seem to find the Gladiator awesome-looking. ( really don't care for the 2-point front tip of that thing) I guess I probably lean more towards the opinion of finding most EU ships to be pretty ugly (but not all). In the case of the Assault Frigate and the Gladiator, both look odd to me but not so bad I can't bring myself to play with them. And gameplay-wise they're pretty cool, so I'll deal.

The MK2 came out of nowhere for Empire At War. I'm still confused why they didn't stick with the original design... what was the need to redesign it and redesignate it? Dreadnoughts did not appear in that game.

I don't think any of the EU ships terribly offend me. There are great designs and there are ok designs. The Assault Frigate MK2 is one of the latter.

For the Gladiator I'm surprised that a ship with such, well, cartoony origins has made it as far as it did. I don't know if the original Demolisher was drawn different from the typical Star Destroyers on purpose or if it was a lazy stand-in, but having it here and so early is an interesting accomplishment for the model. Especially when so little was established for it! I've painted mine to give it that yellow glow from the artwork and it seems to sit pretty well next to my Victory.

I'm not a fan either. I much prefer the Mk-I which is a gorgeous ship and really looks like the upgraded dreadnought class heavy cruiser that it is. I really don't understand why FFG didn't go with that one.

Or crafty? I dunno, when facing Victories I feel CR-90s are too fragile and Nebulon-Bs are too ...particular. The former have to stay at speed to get into the rear vector of the Victory and the latter must take care not to present their side-profile to a Victory. Since Nebulons have such small front-arcs in comparison to the side arcs, I feel this needs a finer degree of control than a Victory does to keep their targets anywhere other than the back.

I've done a game as the rebels with two nebs and two corvettes against two victories. The best I think I could have expected was taking down one Victory. In spite of my losses, one of each of my ships, I managed to do it... but it was closer to a draw than I wanted it to be.

An Assault frigate on the other hand has a number of advantages in its favor. Consider advanced projectors, which the Assault frigate can take, and with it utilize the shields not facing an enemy without needing to queue an engineering command to move them. This means all 13 shields can be utilized in a defense, assuming accuracy doesn't shut down the redirect. Even if it does, that still means you can use your half-damage token, which is arguably more powerful.

Apart from the front the Assault Frigate's weaponry is also superior to the Nebulon-B. It doesn't suffer the very fragile side arcs, and the A version has the same anti-fighter rating as the Escort Nebulon.

If you accept the Assault Frigate as the line-fighter of the Rebellion, the Nebulon-B becomes more of a cheap fighter-swatter and cheap gun platform. You take the support version with your favorite turbolaser for long-range shots and the escort version to solve any fighter problems while Assault Frigates trade blows with VSDs.

I personally like it. Fits in with the Rebels thematically, like a Mon Cal crossed with a Neb.

That's exactly how I see it and why I like the looks of it. But that's just my opinion.
