"Room of Souls" Forgotten Souls Question.

By Omnislash024, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I am going to just read the card, because it has me really confused with the wording here and how the room is supposed to work.

A hero may spend 1 movement point while adjacent to the cauldron to pick it up. As an action, the hero carrying the cauldron may move 1 space. He cannot move or be moved through any other means.

As an action, or by suffering 2 Heart and 2 Fatigue, while adjacent to a pit space, the hero carrying the cauldron may destroy it. He cannot perform any actions other then those listed above.

If the hero carrying the cauldron suffers any amount of Heart he tests Strength. If he fails, or is defeated, the cauldron cracks.

If a hero destroys the cauldron, discard it. That hero draws 1 search card, and each hero receives 2 XP. Then refresh fate and discard this Exploration card.

If the cauldron cracks, advance doom by 1 and discard the cauldron. Each hero receives 1 XP. Then discard this Exploration card.

My issue lies with the "He cannot perform any actions other then those listed above". I am assuming it is just referring to that paragraph only. So if you choose to suffer the damage and fatigue, can you still do other actions then? If a hero were to use a movement action to pick it up while standing next to the cauldron, could he use an action to destroy it? Any clarification at all would help.

From what I read, you need 1 movement point to pick the cauldron so you can either use a movement action or spend one fatigue to gain one movement point and then pick the cauldron.

From this point, the hero can, while adjacent to a pit space, spend on action to destroy the cauldron OR lose 2 heart and 2 fatigue for the same result.

So it seems that it is possible to pick the cauldron and to destroy it without spending any action.

Also, if he decides to perform any of the action above, it is the only action(s) he can do on his turn.

The only part unclear for me is, if my logic is right, that you can pick the cauldron and destroy it without spending actions. In that case, I don't really understand how the sentence "He cannot perform any actions then those listed above" is suppose to be applied.

I would assume that it does not apply because the hero has perform none of the actions above . So he should be free to perform two actions as a normal turn.

Yep. That statement is what has me confused. It's very vague.

It just means that the hero can't use any other actions other than the 'move one space', or 'dump the cauldron'. So no skills, no health potions, ..

"He cannot perform any actions other then those listed above. " It doesn't say 'the one listed above', it means all the ones listed above:

A hero may spend 1 movement point while adjacent to the cauldron to pick it up. As an action, the hero carrying the cauldron may move 1 space. He cannot move or be moved through any other means.

As an action, or by suffering 2 Heart and 2 Fatigue, while adjacent to a pit space, the hero carrying the cauldron may destroy it.

Since the cauldron is 3 spaces away from the closest pit space, a hero would at least need 1 move action/fatigue to pick up the cauldron from an adjacent space (from this point he can't use any actions except those listed, nor move in any way), use 2 actions to move 2 spaces to the pit, then another action to dump the cauldron, unless he suffers the 2 health and fatigue.

I've played Forgotten Souls twice now, and both times I drew the card immediately after 'The Onset', since I always opened the door with the last action of my heroes, I always only have 2 turns to complete this room (because the overlord turn immediately triggers), which (as far as I can see) makes it near impossible to complete the room successfully.

See, because in the Core Game rulebook, it says a hero can as an action place an objective token in any adjacent space. That's what I'd like to do, but are these rules telling me that once a hero picks it up, he can't do anything except move 1 space and/or destroy it?

That seems to be the case yes. You cannot put it down for another hero to pick up.

It seems to me that is EXACTLY why that rule is there. Once a hero picks it up, he must be the one to take it to the pit space.

Ah yes. I think I have it now. Can only perform a move 1 space action and a destroy cauldron action.
