Having a blast with House of Dust and Ash

By Darth Smeg, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

There are so many ways to die in this adventure :)

Possible spoilers ahead, for those who wish to remain ignorant.

Last night saw the party finally completing part II, having now just arrived at the Burning Isle. On the voyage across the sea 2 characters were poisoned, and the Psycher thrown overboard. Having suffered terribly as described earlier Havelas the Psycher arrived back on board the Cygnan Martyr just in time to help fend off the Wrecker assault, and gathering his somewhat surprised friends he headed straigth down to the cabins to confront the "Abbot".

The Abbot responds by using his sorcerous power of Compel on Uthak the weak willed (22 WP) combat monster guardsman, and commands him to turn his Eviscerator on Havelas. One Lightening Attack later and Havelas burns his second Fate Point that day as his legs are sawed off. (-15 Crits hurt!)

I almost felt a little bad for Havelas' player at this point. Should I make it up to him at a later occasion perhaps?

So, after finally putting their heads together for a while they've figured out it was Octavia who poisoned them, and are now watching her like hawks. Everyone else are scared of the Pyscher who flies in and cooks Wreckers and Heretics with lightning from his fingers, and Uthak feels really bad for cutting his friend in half. (Although the Psycher said it was OK, and suggested they go into showbusiness with their sawing-the-feminine-man-in-half routine).

And Part III will be even worse demonio.gif

I'd say that when the auction rolls around give the Psyker a chance to purchase some bionics, maybe even good quality, to replace what he's lost and make sure he can get them installed fairly quickly. The Acolytes are about to enter a combat scenario the likes they probably haven't ever encountered before and not being able to walk around is a real buzzkill in such a situation.

The Psycher has Regenerate, and Uthak tried to stick his legs back on with duct tape to make up for his previous actions.

"Uthaks bad. Sorry 'bout that. Here, Uthak fix!" (Uthak ain't the smartest of the bunch, but he means well)

So in a moment of weakness I agreed that Regenerate and Seal Wounds would splice up the cuts and re-attach his legs. One of them is a bit shorter than the other, thanks to the spectacular destructive power of the Eviscerator, but that should settle in a few days.

Thanks to the incredible healing power of the Psycher, being ready for combat encounters is usually not the problem. They also have a tendency to mop the floor with all my carefully prepared opponents.

And that's why we're having a blast with this adventure: The challenges presented to them cannot be solved by superior firepower alone, they must think, snoop and make friends (hard, when they're a bunch of paranoid, suspicious killers). Good stuff!

Make sure you post their response to Nonesuch. That should be hilarious.

It was :)

Uthak the Guardsman and Brutus the Arbitrator met Nonesuch and retinue, and had a little chat. Brutus almost freaked out by unexplainable feelings of fear and nausea, but Uthak thought he was a great guy. Later the rest of the party meet him during the formal reception, and the Psycher and the Cogboy also really like him. The Assassin gets the freaky feeling, but having suffered some mental traumas of almost-death recently decides to not involve the others, but to kill him on his own.

So he sneaks off, hides in the shadows outside Nonesuch's suite (having tailed him there after the reception). During the night, a hooded and cloaked figure comes out, and Castus the Crazy Assassin follows... down into the narrow and twisting corridors of the tombs and catacombs. Without a map he realizes he will lose his way very soon, and decides to put a bolt in the back of the suspicious man's head.

A few rounds later, and a Fate Point burned, shocked players around the table realized all is not as it seems :)
