Mirror Match Theory

By Killionaire, in Star Wars: Armada

We've all talked a bit about Imperial v Rebel gameplay in Wave 1, and there's some good discussions there. But what about Mirror Matches? Reb vs Reb, Imp vs Imp. The fact that both sides are so different are going to make these sorts of matches very different.

What I can see is Fighters keeping their importance: Even if Rebel builds will be more heavily weighted towards anti-ship strike.

Nebulon-Bs, renown for their fragility, are going to be even more flimsy against other rebels. I can absolutely see CR90s racing in and blowing up those squishy little sides.

B-Wings will be near useless in rebel v rebel fights. I can't imagine how hard it'd be to get them reliably to engage an enemy AF2, much less one of the faster ships.

In the fight between Dodanna and Mon Mothma, Mon Mothma is ahead.

Isard is going to be great on Imp vs Imp matches when not against Tarkin. Seeing when those 3-stack ships are going to Squadron or Maneuver will be huge.

Demolisher isn't nearly as strong when going on it's death ride against a VSD.

Mauler Mithel is going to be very strong when damaging larger numbers of weaker fighters.

XX9s are going to be way nastier when you're laying double-crits on VSDs for those moments when you do get through the shield.

What else do we see?

Given the fragility of ties, Soontir Fel could be devastating as a counter to them as well.

Ryhmer and his Tie-Bombers would have a field day against slow as molasses VSDs. Wouldn't even need a squadron command to keep them firing for a few rounds.

Reb v Reb would be generally very challenging for bomber squadrons due to the fact that many Reb ships can outrun squadrons with ease. Would depend heavily on using the squadron command round after round.

Neb B v Neb B would come down to who could outmaneuver the other to fire into their side arc. Would involve a lot of baiting. But once it happens, the disadvantaged Neb would go down fairly quickly.

VSD v VSD would be a considerably more boring version of the above, lol. In the end, would probably favor the squadron focused VSD. If a Glad is attacking a VSD, assuming he doesn't try to rush the VSDs front arc, Glad wins every time. Just a matter of slowing to speed 1 once it's on the side and circling it until it falls.

Assault Frigates attacking each other would, even more so than the VSD, be heavily dependent on squadron commands. Assault Frigates fire hardest from the side, so it's too ridiculously easy for them to keep going in a circle firing broadsides.

Frigates may be fragile, but they are the only rebel ship that has 2 dice against fighter squadrons. I see the rebels in general as having the superior fighters so having good anti-fighter firepower could become more important.

Dodonna's Pride can in theory, 1 shot another corvette if it does a squad action to activate Luke Skywalker.

We see this game very differently.(I'm ofbthe opinion the rebels need some fighter help)

Played it just yesterday:

300 points

Player A:

VSD I + Tarkin, Expanded Hangars, Weapons Liaison

VSD I + Expanded Hangars, Gunnery team

11 Squads (10 TIEs + Howlrunner)

Player B:

VSD I + Tarkin, Assault Concussion Launchers, Enhanced Armament, Defense Liaison, Gunnery Team

VSD I + Assault Concussion Launchers, Enhanced Armament, Defense Liaison, Gunnery Team

7 Squads (6 TIEs + Howlrunner)

Mission: Minefield

Player B won through capitulation (Player As first VSD was down, the second was about to go without a chance, Player B lost 5 Squadrons and had lost half HP of the first VSD). Player A missplaced his VSDs at the beginning and Player B managed to fire with both VSDs at one VSD at a time.
