Any chance we will get a seafaring campaign?

By Salem, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I really wanted to play the Sea of Blood campaign for D1 but never managed to make the time. Now that I have D2, I am really hopefull that FFG will give us a similar campaign. I would love to have some boarding actions or even ship to ship combat like they set up in the Sea of Blood set. Anyone else want this?

I think it would be really cool. I've become a big fan of the Quest Vault FFG made for Descent- it allows anyone to really easily make new adventures based on the current map tiles and monsters that have been released. A "Sea of Blood" type adventure is still out of reach, though, because there aren't tiles that can even be approximated as oceanic, for the most part. As a result, it's the type of expansion that currently requires official development to expand the scope of the game (and once it's released, the possibilities for custom adventures would largely increase.) In that regard, I'd like to see one.

Honestly, though, I still haven't made it through Heirs of Blood (or even Manor of Ravens as a proper mini-campaign)- I'm alright not hearing about more expansions for the immediate future.

Is there any way play 1st edition expansion (i.e sea of blood) with the 2nd edition rules, components, etc.. ?

or is it 1st edition base game only compatible with 1st edition expansions and the same for the 2nd ed..

The second one. They aren't really compatible.

What they should do is make a tile that looks completely like a ship and then you can connect that tile to different points to make it seem as if the heroes need to board/deploy from it at the beginning of quests. Monsters could include: Pirates, Merman, Kraken Arms, etc.

I would prefer mermaid over merman.

And I would love to see a dock tile with the ship tile(s).

I have avoided this whole conversation about different "worlds" in the past, but now my curiosity has gotten the best of me.

First, please understand that it is NOT my intention to attack, or be negative about these ideas. Instead, I simply am truly curious as to why a "sea world" or "desert world" environment for this game seems to be so appealing to so many people.

Are you simply looking for diversity from the base game? Is it the potential of new mechanics? New monsters?

What tickles your feathers about this whole category of discussion? I am at a loss as to why it seems so important to so many, especially since the basic premise behind D1e and D2e is the fact that it is, at its base design, a dungeon crawling game.

Granted, RtL and SoB for D1e strayed somewhat from this premise, but still, when I think about this game, I think and see underground, creepy lairs and dungeons. Not sea tiles. Not sand tiles. Not anything else, really.

Of course, as I have stated in the past, I am not the most creative bent person ... :P :D

I can only answer with my reasons for wanting new environment.

1) I intend to use D2E content to play D&D 4th Edition. The more variety, the more fun. Heroes, Lieutenants, Monsters, Tiles... the more, the better.

2) The most interesting campaign so far is, in my opinion, Shadow of Nerekhall. The theme and the mechanics are everywhere in this campaign, it is so ... immersive. I want more of that stuff.

I did this using D1E, once upon a time. It worked rather well.

Worth noting that if you intend to play D&D using the Descent bits, you could very easily incorporate 1E tiles and such into your game. That would get you plenty of sea-themed components, and some ice-themed components, assuming you have or can find Sea of Blood and Tomb of Ice. The other expansions from 1E don't really add much that D2E doesn't already give you, but more tiles make for bigger dungeons!

The Runebound boards make for nice overworld maps, too.

You might also look into the actual D&D tile set packages. They have sets specifically for this sort of variety. At least, I recall one for urban environments and one for wilderness (already covered by Descent, really.) Everything is 1-inch squares, so you can just keep using the Descent minis and the transition is relatively seamless.
