Hero`s of Terrinoth , which factions do they belong to ?

By sonja2014, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I was wondering if i can receive your feedback about this:

In the world of Terrinoth games such as Descent/Runebound universe we watch various hero`s arrive in the games, some are

obvious by looking at their miniature, hero card. they are Human, Undead, Uthuk and Elves and there are Orcs and dwarves hero`s

from factions of Runeage card game. There are some hero`s whom you can not tell which faction they belong.

Do you wish if FFG would insert a faction banner on their hero cards that way you would know which faction they belong to,

It may not be important but when we play Descent, we have created a tournament format in which four to five hero`s representing

each faction form a team and then each team goes against the overlord for each scenario and after each 6 teams

{Human, Undead, Uthuk and Elves and there are Orcs and dwarves} complete one scenario, the teams would earn victory points based on success of the quest, number of monsters killed, number of Golds captured e.t.c...

and then the teams move to the next scenario and eventually at the end of 12 months you have over all points champion...

but i have to say we often have to guess which hero should represent what faction as there is some dispute over the origin of the hero.

but the point system is amazing, for example so far for the season 2015 (we are in to our fifth month) here are the standings

with each team has completed four scenario`s {one scenario per month (success or failure) with six hero`s per team , using 5 in the game and one reserve as substitute)}.

1. Uthuk Y`lann completed 4 scenario`s, 3 wins, 1 Fail, 340 Gold, Killed 18 Monsters, Total points 185 points.

2. Daqan Lords completed 4 scenario`s 3 wins, 1 Fail, 291 Gold, Killed 15 Monsters, Total points 146 points.

3. Orcs of Broken Plains completed 4 scenario`s, 2 wins, 2 Fail, 207 Gold, Killed 12 Monsters, Total points 122 points.

4. Dwarves of Dunwarr completed 4 scenario`s 2 wins, 2 Fail, 194 Gold, Killed 10 Monsters, Total points 116 points.

5. Waiqar the Undying completed 4 scenario`s 1 wins, 3 Fail, 136 Gold, Killed 07 Monsters, Total points 73 points.

6. Latari Elves completed 4 scenario`s 30wins, 4 Fail, 109 Gold, Killed 04 Monsters, Total points 39 points.

And in closing i must say our gaming group of all girls really love Descent, Runebound, Rune Age, Runewars games, Thank you to all of

you fans to posting and in a way teaching us how to get better in these games,

I hope in the future FFG publish some female hero`s in addition to male hero`s (love to see a Blood sister hero ;) !

and perhaps applying a faction banner to allow some fans play these games as teams representing factions in over all point system

Sonja- while that would be interesting, I kind of like the idea of the heroes being more like mercenaries, who will work for any of the factions, provided the price is right (and of course, within reason.) I recently made a custom campaign where the plot actually revolves around the Daqan hiring the heroes to do some investigating- in one of the Interludes, the heroes come up against heroes that have been hired by the "evil factions"- so it sort of plays with that idea a bit. Loyalties would be nice, but I like the idea of heroes as free agents.

I concur with Zaltyre, the heroes are generally free agents and wandering adventurers who don't necessarily swear allegiance to any particular political faction. Some of them may even switch - like Bogran working for the Uthuk Y'llan in the Runewars fluff. He's not a member of the Uthuk faction, he was just hired by them to seek out Runes.

For example, Widow Tahra is an orc, but she's not of the Broken Plains orcs. Her backstory makes it clear she was living in the vicinity of the Free Cities before her family was murdered by prejudiced humans. There is a large population of civilized orcs living among the humans of the Free Cities, following thier alliance at the end of the Dragon Wars.

Dwarven heroes could hail from Dunwarr, or they could hail from Forge (one of the Free Cities and thus part of Daqan.) Or any number of unspecificed dwarven settlements, for that matter.

Now that i read your notes it makes perfect sense why its better to leave them as they are.

Thank you.

is there a novel or back story about Terrinoth ?

I mean world of warcraft, warhammer they all have novels, deep stories

I wish somewhere , someone starts a series of novel or books outside of the rule books..

Well I propose Zaltyre to be this novel's writer !

While I am flattered, absolutely not! I am no writer. Also, I've really only played Descent and Runewars, with a bit of Runebound.

Don't forget Battlelore.

FFG doesn't really go into much of the Lore. I'm assuming that the Descent adventures actually takes place during the time that Runewars happens, but who knows. They don't exactly give you a timeline.

There was an absolutely flabbergasting amount of lore in Runebound, albiet scattered across a large number of cards and many, many expansions (counting card expansions.) Fitting, I suppose, since that was the first game in the setting. Other games added their share of fluff, usually in the form of rulebook intros or website snippets connected to previews, but it has certainly been on the decline lately.

Also, in more recent years (ie: Descent 2nd) the lore has taken a distinctive turn towards more generic fantasy. There used to be a wide variety of non-human hybrids (heroes and monsters), non-sentient, animalistic dragons and various unusual monsters like Living Runes. Now it's mostly just elves and orcs and (ugh) gnomes, like everything else.

Not saying that's a bad thing, mind you - I still love the games themselves. Just saying that the lore has become noticably less unique over the years.

One thing I like about the world though is that they do indeed seem to focus on Dragons quite a bit. Even in Descent, you seem to come across some Elder Dragons that you have to survive against.

If anything else is encouraging though, it's the recent Heirs of Blood book. FF took the time to put in a little bit of Lore, which probably enhances the campaign greatly. Perhaps they are finally realizing that some people want it.

I would love it if FFG got into the lore a bit more. To fill the gap I have been reading terry brooks Shannarra series

Check my campaign site. I've poured over the lore from Descent, Runebound, Runewars, Battlelore, etc. to try and piece all the lore together.

Absolutely, I've got at least 200 creatures in my Terrinoth Bestiary (most from the cards)

Of course, since this thread, the Realms of Terrinoth book was released, so that's the official lore, but other than some timeline and map discrepancies, most of it is still pretty solid.
