Getting back into the game

By roninbodhisattva, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hey everybody,

So I'm a long time fan of A Game of Thrones, and have been playing since Westeros, but when the format switched to the LCG, due to the switch and other circumstances, I kind of drifted away. I'd like to rectify that now, and have bought a copy of the core set for the LCG, but am wondering what the easiest way to build up a nice base of cards to start building decks would be. For those who have been keeping up with the LCG, how many of each chapter pack would you recommend buying? Does it vary from pack to pack, or would it be a good policy to buy a couple of each? How many multiple copies are found in the packs? Also, since many key cards only have a single copy in the core set, have people been buying multiple copies of that (I'd rather not, mostly because of the price). Also, some general questions on the format: are all currently released chapter packs tournament legal? And...can I use my old copies of reprinted cards in my LCG decks so, for example, could I throw in a couple copies of my old Retreat's since it's in the core set?

Thanks!

Personally I have some CP that I need only 1x and other that 3x woldn't be so bad :-) It depends on the house / houses you want to carry on. If you use tzumain or http://info.wsisiz.edu.pl/~szczesnj/ you can have an idea.

yes - if it is a stright reprint (no added icons, keywords or text) you cna use old cards like retreat or VED renly in a oturnmaent. be careful - som elike the streets and renly's Courtier have slight chnges that make them illegal in tournmaent play.

all chapter packs are legal as is the Core set in sanctioned LCG events.

As for amounts of CPs to purchase - I'm sorry but it really depends on what House and what deck you want to play. Many key cards like samwell the To Be events, the Han'ds Judgement are only 1x. If you wnat these to be important parts of your deck, you will need two or three copies of eah chapter pack. on the other hand, they have done a pretty good job of printing 3x of staple cards like the winter/summer Ravens, characters and utility attachments. If you give us an idea of what House you are leaning towards I am sure folks cna help you with your purchasing strategy.

At www.agotny.net/ there is a list of the current LCG reprints. The ones which have mechanical changes to the text are marked.

Check out these recent threads for some ideas on chapter pack purchases:

There are other discussions from further back as well. Try googling with "site:www.fantasyflightagmes.com" and you can find other threads related to your questions. If you want to build the most consistent deck, you'll probably need multiple copies of the Core Set and some Chapter Packs. I'd say you're best off starting out buy one of each thing until certain prove their worth to you. There is not a very well organized tournament structure at the moment, and what is considered good varies from region to region. So there's not much incentive to jump in buying 3X of a lot of things unless you have a pretty competitive play group and they recommend loading up on certain chapter packs.
