6' x 4' Table Topper

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Armada

Disclaimer: I am NOT a particularly hand individual, so this was my first time trying this.

Most gaming tables are something like 6' x 2.5' or whatever, and my kitchen table is only 5 feet, so I really wanted a home way to do both X-Wing epic play, and Armada standard play. I went up to Lowe's and picked up a 8x4 piece of plywood and had them cut it for me. Did some work on it and here is the finished product:

IMG_1665%201.jpgI actually had them give it an extra inch when cutting it... JUST Iin case. I didn't want my FFG playmats falling off the edge.

Love it!

Once I have time after all the family birthdays in am doing the same thing.Mojave the same storage not too.

Documented the process of making it in case anyone wants to learn from my mistakes!

Sweet! I've been meaning to do that myself!

Nice!

Gaming tables are essential.

Why I convinced my wife we needed a large dinner table. (320 x 130 cm.)

( 320 cm = 126 in / 130 cm = 51.2 in)

I would suggest that many people might want to split up their 6x4 in to 2x4 sections for ease of storage and movement.
I did this a long time ago for warhammer etc. Works really nicely. I fitted little clips under the boards to hold them together which works really well. One either side that will be protruding out from the edge of your actual table (see below).
I also have a sheet of cloth to protect the surface of the dining room table im putting them on.

Funny, that you are so nice to convert cm into inches. I still have to see anyone not just simply using the strange feet and inch, that I i have to convert myself.

Lived and worked in the UK (a long time ago in a youth far away ;) ) so I guess that still has some influence?

I'm in the exact same process of doing this except I chose a MDF board.

I've been using two 3x4 school project tri-fold posterboard. Perfect for FFGs star maps or those sweet Frontline gaming mats. Works great and you can fold them back up and store them in a small closet. You can pick them up for just a few dollars at your local Wallyworld or Targét. 6x4 play area, Quick & Easy!

I did the same - MDF with a very thin layer of batting and black felt. It came out beautifully and I painted some "sidelines" to indicate the Armada playing area. I posted some pictures of what I ended up with in an older thread. I'm at work or I'd be less lazy and just post it here as well.

I love it though, it looks fantastic and the models stay put. Two negatives though: my white kitten seems magnetically attracted to it whenever it is set up... and it is heavy. I like that it's heavy in the sense that I'm confident that it isn't going to warp on me and that people can lean on the ends of the table without fear, but because it is a single piece, it is not convenient to store and set up without a partner. Thankfully I live alone, so when I sometimes go a week without my dining room table, it's no big deal. ;)

Nice job, really like the table.

I am actually attempting this in a few days. Thanks!

So when XWing came out, my kids and I spent a weekend building a topper for that. I made a 4x6 topper with a 4x4 play area. Had I known epic was going to become a thing, or armada was coming, I would have done things a bit differently. So, no, I am building a new topper- this one will still be 4x6 with a 3x6 play area and two 6 inch rails on either side that will have cutouts for things like dice, ships, cards, etc. The next one is going to be multi-purpose. I am using 15/32 thick sanded pine plywood and pine trim. Once all is said and done, I will be staining it as opposed to painting as I did here. One thing I found out when I did this one is make sure if you are painting your topper that you paint both sides. I didn't and as a result, the wood bowed up. Don't make my mistake!!

The world should be in metric. Base 10 just makes more sense. Most math is done in base 10, and if you possess all the digits of your hands, you already have the necessary calculator to calculate metric.
