A few questions leading up to The Interlude - The Overlord Revealed

By sumo28, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi, we are doing our first campaign and we always argue over the rules since it is new to us and arguing is in our nature haha. I'm reading that the interlude is a long session and want to clear up some questions that I've already anticipated that we will have:

1. Upon defeat of a figure holding the Shadow Key, what happens to the Shadow Key? I assume it would drop where the figure was defeated; I don't think it'd stay with that figure, because that figure might not be eligible to be reinforced (portal closed) or the O/L may not choose to reinforce him.

2. Once a defeated Lieutenant is reinforced at a portal, can he still use a relic he was wielding? I am leaning towards not due to pg. 22 and pg. 15 with "defeated" defined. I found this question in another thread and it didn't seem to have a definitive answer. Also, unrelated to Interlude, if he cannot use relic after defeat, does this hold true if he was defeated in an Encounter I that he can't use the relic in Encounter II?

3. Can O/L drop the Shadow Key freely or can he only drop it by taking an action and placing it in an adjacent space? "A figure may place the Shadow Key in an adjacent empty space by spending an action". Similarly, since this rule only says "a figure", does this mean that heroes can also move the Shadow Key into an adjacent space, or am I taking this out of context? I'm very confused on this one and Googling yield mixed answers.

4. Does the O/L need to spend an action (two total) and be adjacent to each of the two doors to open them? "The locked doors may only be opened by a figure carrying the Shadow Key." I think this is a yes.

5. I'm assuming Zachareth can only be reinforced through an opened portal - is that correct?

6. A general question we had regarding Knights - Can the Advance move/attack be interrupted by a movement action? We had read that you can interrupt a movement action with a movement action , but i think the answer to Advance (which says "move up to your speed") is NO. We decided it's ok to use stamina in between the move and attack of an Advance. Is this correct how we play it?

Thanks for your time!

I'm not sure about the others, but i will try to answer #6.

As Advance is NOT a "move" action, in that it does not give you movement points, it cannot be interupted to perform a move action. You can spend movement points gained by stamina or a regular move action before or after, but not during.

Gonna try to answer your questions concisively. ( Or if Zaltyre doesn't get to this first. :b )

1. Upon defeat of a figure holding the Shadow Key, what happens to the Shadow Key?

No figure can hold the key except a master monster or Baron Zachereth. If the figure is defeated, the key is dropped onto that space. In the case of a large monster, it gets dropped in any space the OL chooses that it's base occupied.

2. Once a defeated Lieutenant is reinforced at a portal, can he still use a relic he was wielding?

Yes. If the OL won a Relic in a Previous quest, he may choose to equip it on the Lieutenant and can wield it for the duration of the quest.

3. Can O/L drop the Shadow Key freely or can he only drop it by taking an action and placing it in an adjacent space?

"A figure may place the Shadow Key in an adjacent empty space by spending an action". It has to spend that action to do it.

4. Does the O/L need to spend an action (two total) and be adjacent to each of the two doors to open them?

To open a door, a figure needs to spend an action and be holding the Shadow Key.

5. I'm assuming Zachareth can only be reinforced through an opened portal - is that correct?

Yes.

6. A general question we had regarding Knights - Can the Advance move/attack be interrupted by a movement action?

Advance is one action and can not be interrupted by other actions. You can however interrupt a move action with Advance. But if you trigger Advance it is all one motion. You must move and then instantly perform the attack if able.

Also as Alarmed stated, Advance isn't a move action. The character doesn't move, but is placed, which makes a whole lot of difference. Kinda what makes Syndreal so badass,

I think you're thinking of "Oath of Honor" where the Knight is placed. "Advance" is definitely "move up to your speed." Both abilities have been said to count against Syndrael's hero ability in the "unofficial FAQ" thread, I believe.

EDIT: Here's a community thread where there is a posted response from Justin about "Oath of Honor" counting as a figure having moved during their turn. Pinning down the words and definitions is a bit tricky- because you're right, "moving your speed" or spending movement points is a different mode of movement than placing. From the response, however, it seems that the intention of the hero ability is stationary = didn't move, new space = moved.
