Twin Ion Engines

To paint the US as the "sole saviour of the world" in the First World War, Second World War or Cold War conflict is as inaccurate and (for need of a better word) insulting as to ignore the US completely.

Agreed. It's akin to saying the Jedi saved Naboo from the Separatists without mentioning the critical roles that Jar Jar and little Anni played.

I don't know of what events you speak.

And that's why you make that joke about the British instead, because over here it's still completely true.

Doesn't surprise me, especially given some of the "England isn't part of Europe!" arguments I've seen on some other wargaming forums.

Of course, the latter could stem from the fact that "those islands off the coast don't really belong to the mainland" seems to be a historically British issue...

More like the Naboo Defence Force and the Gungan Grand Army.

Well if we ever get that bleeding referendum we won't be part of Europe anymore.

Then we can blow up the channel tunnel and forget we were ever connected to France.

And then we can be even more of an isolated ex-power nobody cares about any more.

But let's not completely derail this thread with politics.

Does the Tie Defender need some form of squad-relevant ability to make it viable? Seems like it.

All this politics has reminded me that one of these days, when the kids are asleep, I really need to watch Team America, World Police.

What do you call someone who only speaks one language?

american

myself included

I imagine that joke was funny somewhere, sometime, when a lot of people didn't also speak Spanish.

Fully concur with Mr. WW. If you have issue with Americans; then need to look back on history as you could be all speaking Nazi German, oder, Soviet Russian, or maybe, a little Imperial Japanese.... (how quickly history forgets.....meine gott!)

WonderWAAAGH was saying that since Spanish is increasingly relevant and increasingly widely-spoken in the US (especially in the South and Southwest), treybert's joke has lost a lot of what humor value it might once have had.

I'm not sure what Imperial Japanese has to do with that--or, come to think of it, how Imperial Japanese differs from ordinary Japanese.

And that's why you make that joke about the British instead, because over here it's still completely true.

As for what Conundrum said, you might be taking patriotism to the point of fantasy. The US was undoubtedly one of the major players in the Second World War but to suggest they swooped in and saved everyone like a knight saving a damsel from a dragon is both inaccurate and almost a little offensive as it all but disregards the contribution and sacrifice of countless service personnel and civilians from Britain, France, Australia, Russia, Poland and countless other countries. It's called a Word War for a reason.

This historical amnesia on the part of Americans was the theme and subject of Inglorious Basterds. Great movie.

Seems that it's typical for a thread where nobody can say anything more due to the lack of information to slide down into jokes or politics...

I must admit though that such kind of talk is a pretty interesting part of international English-speaking forums. No offense, but real concern about Soviet Russian-speaking world is hilarious for me.

(Which, of course, I have just precipitated in this thread by bringing it up)

I think a lot of people forget that the cold war was ended by East Germans in Berlin - not by politicians

The Republic of Scotland will build a new one.

I wonder if an independant Scotland would be a Republic. Everyone loves the Queen.

You had your chance to escape and bottled it so now you continue to enjoy free health care and like it!

Did I miss the WWII chat?

I wanted to add a pithy one-liner:

"World War Two was won with Russian manpower using American manufacturing as seed money."
