extra fighters worth it?

By Hidatom, in Star Wars: Armada

I am thinking about a 3 X Neb build with lots of escorts and / or bombers.

with only 100 points spent on fighters should I invest in 2 packs of fighters?

I got 2 packs of Imperial Fighters and will be getting a second pack of Rebel fighters at some point. While I may not always need them, i think 2 of each will give me enough options. I almost feel like for imperials its a yes, while rebels its a maybe right now.

I plan to get at least 2, possibly 3. I'm a huge beliver in bombers as an offensive weapon.

especially with Rhymer. I'm not sold on the 3rd yet, or more so painting 24 more TIEs

I thought about getting up to 3 imperial pack and 2 rebel packs, but then figured out that I will never field more than 2 of each specialised fighters. Why? Because even if it look awesome to think Rhymer with 4 other Bomber will wreak havoc on a ship, a simple well placed X-Wing/A-Wing screen will prevent that awesome combo.

Other bombers need to be at R1 of Rhymer, so really, you only need to factor in Rhymer position, because if you lock down Rhymer, you most likely will lock down all the bombers wanting to use Rhymer effect. Thenthey all become normal bombers needing to be at R1 of ships.

The only real cool thing I can think of with multiple packs would be 9 A-Wing.

Well it depends on how fighters do in the Meta.

As of now I see 2 possible scenarios for fighters in the meta.

  1. High squadron command ships with lots of fighters become dominating
  2. More capital ships with very few fighters become dominating

It really depends on how the points cost input to VP output turns out to be. While I hope that it isn't, it is possible that the Fighters could be the Armada version of munitions in X-wing. however with a lot more point flexibility having 300 points for Armada over the 100 points in X-wing the points spent on fighters and the fact they don't discard after you use them, might not be too punishing if it happens to be a sub-optimal build.

Some of my favourite 1 pack 100 points attack wings:

4 X-wings

2 Y-wings

2 B-wings

Luke

Wedge

Dutch

Y-wing

2 B-wings

2 of each starfighter squadron

If you want to fly 100pts worth of Y-Wings, you'll need 5 packs... But we don't know how viable that's going to be. I really want to see it flown however.

That being said, I'm probably only buying one pack for now. I don't want to end up in the same place as I did in X-Wing where I had more ships than I could field with expansion packs (specifically the "Aces" packs and the Rebel Transport). I suspect that we'll see some rereleases in this game as well. Two packs is probably reasonable, but I can't afford to blow as much money as I did on X-Wing. Especially if I get it to the table as frequently as I did X-Wing.

You always have to factor in the objective that you are playing. Fighters I think will be very good, because instead of only having a few shots from ships, you have a chance to inflict serious damage on a ship, especially a slow moving ship that keeps overlapping your fighters.

I think fighters/squadrons are the spice of the game, and the ships are the meat. Especially bombers...the ability to sneak in a couple crits can really turn the tide, so you need to have enough interceptors (the role, not necessarily the fighter) to deal with that.

I'm still only rocking a single core set, but I think I'll end up being pretty fighter heavy once I start buying some expansions. Plus, it just looks so **** cool (especially if they're painted!!!)
