Modifying Dice, Getting it right.

By Clowater, in Star Wars: Armada

So, just so I have it right in my head, and future games.

Say I have a Victory II

Warlord, Leading Shots, Screed, and XX-9 Turbolasers.

I reveal a concentrate fire command.

During my attack, I nominate my front arc as an attacker to a hull zone at long range.

I pickup my 3 red dice. Spend my command dial, to add one Blue die to the pool.

I roll those dice. Spend the blue die. Reroll any undesired results. Trade one accuracy for a double hit, and spend any blanks for a crit.

Total up damage and resolve.

Does this sound correct?

You can't add a blue die. It wasn't part of the original attack.

The FAQ has me confused then.

It says if I have an ability that allows me to add dice, I may add any dice, regardless of its range to the attack pool.

Edit:

I see my mistake now.

When spending the dial, it has to be the same colour of a dice already in the pool.

So. Assume I'm in short range. Is my process of modified dice still correct?

You add dice after you roll your basic pool, which is based off of your battery armament. Thus, the sequence you have for your situation would go like this:

1. Roll 3 red dice.

2. Spend dial to add one red die (you can add one die of any color already in your pool, your pool currently only has red dice).

3. Roll the additional die.

4. Use Warlord to change one die with an accuracy to a face with a hit.

5. Use Screed to spend (remove) a die (presumably with a blank) to change another die to a crit.

You also resolve Concentrate Fire after the initial roll, not before. You may get a perfect roll and decide you want to save your Concentrate Fire for some other attack that turn.

You can't add a blue die. It wasn't part of the original attack.

This is correct, but I want to make sure people understand why. Under the concentrate firepower dial, it says the dice added MUST be a color already in the attack.

If you were able to add a black dice, due the opening salve objective (when second player the dice can be any color), then use the concentrate firepower dial, then you would be able to add a black dice. (But not blue dice, since they would not be part of the attack pool.)

Definitely important to take limitations into consideration, because dice modification does not use range when considering dice to add by default. As Darrwood mentions, this also makes your order of operations matter; since all modifications occur at the same time, the player decides the order that they're executed.

I applaud the OP for having the wisdom to ask the question, because he definitely ain't the only player out there that needs to take a long, hard look at how the timing and such come together for various integral mechanics of Armada. Me proudly amongst them!
