Playing on vassal and people reporting on challenge boards without asking for rank game

By Krynn007, in X-Wing

Just wanted to throw this out there

Played a game the other day on vassal against bullet macar

I wasn't going to play, was only watching and was asked if I wanted to play.

I said sure why not

I don't check my emails often, so when I checked I noticed that I had an email saying a game was reported, I wasn't impressed

Since it was after the 24 hour period the game has been automatically reported.

If you want to play elo matches you have to ask.

Don't go reporting without asking

Do not assume just because someone has elo by their name that every game they play is ranked

If I had known it was a elo match I actually would have refused as I was mentally tired (long day from work) and I was play testing some ideas with the squad I may use at regionals.

Also this post is also the only way I know of how to reach this player as there isn't a message option (at least that I know of on vassal)

Maybe you'll see this or maybe not, but this is also a suggestion to other players who may do the same

edit

It's not the end of the world by any means and I'm not mad at said player and I'm not trying to make him/her look bad but I wish people wouldn't just assume things.

Always ask if a game is to be ranked or not

Just good etiquette

If your attempt is to bring light to an issue and not public shame you failed. There is no reason to mention the player by name.

...is this the way Vassal ELO works? Both players get a veto as to whether a game will count? That seems like a sketchy basis for running a ranking system.

It seems reasonable that one should know going into the match that it is a ranked match.

I am interested in participating in ELO, but I experiment on Vassal too. Ranking every match could discourage some off the wall ideas.

I don't know their email, phone number, address. Can't text them, and as I said as far as I'm aware no way to message someone who is not online.

I want this player to be aware not to assume without asking

Not trying to public shame anyone

I'm likely not going to be on vassal any time soon. Even if I am on who's to say when they will be on again

I just wanted to point out to this player that he should not assume.

Sadly if I don't mention their user name how would they know I'm talking about them.

I just want to point out that it's wrong to assume.

I wasn't impressed to see the message in my inbox two days after the game

I'd play him again, no problem, but don't assume just because someone has elo by their name that a game is ranked

So please don't just assume I'm trying to shame someone. Not at all, but if someone is unaware of something there is only one way to correct it.

Without saying names they may not realize what they did.

I also hope this may prevent it from happening to others by other players

There are rules to ranked games which Is pretty much self explanatory

Just because you sign up with elo does not make every game you play ranked.

Each player must agree to a rank match for example

And in our game that took place on the 13 I was not asked.

Just received a message asking if I wanted to play.

I actually would not have as I knew I wasn't able to play well since I was exhausted from long day of wor.

If I am playing a ranked game I want to be at my best.

I'll also play more serious instead of making decisions that are big gambles

If I happen to see him on I will let you know. I think I have played a couple games against him recently (will double check my log files, but 95% sure it was him). Incidentally I won, guess it should have been ELO ranked, but I haven't bothered with ELO rankings. :D

Thanks juggler

I'm not mad at him, and I'd play him again, but maybe it's something that just isn't that clear.

Ya I don't use the elo much. Seems most i ask don't use it, so I just kind of stopped bothering, but even so it would be nice to be informed that a game is ranked or not

Isn't he on these forums? You could PM him here. I've PM'd several times, and it's always been a good experience.

Haha, yah, I certainly wouldn't call someone out on the forums!!!

I just figured this would be the best way to get through

I don't believe you can search for members.

I stand corrected, you can, but a search for his name comes up with 0 results

So if he does come here could be a different name

Don't see the big deal.

I'm not insulting the guy or anything.

I just want to make it clear to him that he should ask, not just assume.

Don't think there is anything wrong with that, and when there isn't a way to contact them what other way is there to get in contact with them?

There is vassal, but i won't be on for awhile, and who knows when he'll be on at the same time as I, and as time goes on its more likely he won't remember what I'm talking about, so I thought this was the best way to get in touch with him.

I didn't have to use his user name, but again if he reads this and I didn't use a name, then he probably may not know it was him I was talking about.

I just wanted to make it clear that he should have asked, and hopefully make it clear to others

Fair enough!

Also, can't you just decline the results? At least, that's how I assumed it happened. Or does it auto-agree after 24 hrs? That's a funky system, but I get why they would do that. Can't you refute the results on the site? Like "Report a Match"?

That's why I always double/triple check with my opponent before the game, at least once while I've started the log. It's also nice to ask from the beginning for an ELO game.

I've only played on Vassal a few times, but what's the big deal about "ranked" matches?

It's mostly bragging rights. Having a high rank shows your skill. It's not a huge deal, but I know if I played a game I would want to know if it's a ranked game or not. For me that would change what and how I play.

Yes you can refuse it, but it is only 24 hours.

I don't check my emails often, so I never thought to check.

Especially since I was not informed I was apparently playing a ranked game

That is proper etiquette, to ask, and never hurts to double check

Well its not a huge deal, and I haven't done a lot of ranked games but I do like to keep proper stats such as win/lose etc.

Quite honestly I did some stupid moves in our game and I was testing out some ideas I was thinking, to which paid off terribly.

Had I had played my best game, (and wasn't tired) I believe I had a good chance to win, but being tired and trying out new set up scenerio and a strategy that I wanted to see if it's good or bad, ya, I'd not have done that
