"Highlander" style tournament

By rabid1903, in X-Wing

Hello everyone, I have a new tournament style that I'd like to propose to my gaming club when I get home. It'll be a while, so I anticipate the Raider will be out.

Basically the rules boil down to everyone getting to pick three squads from the lists below. One has to be a "20" pt list, one a "40" pt list, and one a "60" pt list. Many of these are a point or two over, just to try to balance the power. They do not have to be from the same faction; in fact, it is highly unlikely all three squads will come from the same faction.

After choosing their three squads, there is open play for 3 hours. Any number of games can be played in this time, and will be played in the following format:

1. Players will wager one or more of their squads in the battle. This is intended to have the players agree on what each other will fly.

2. Players must use the squads they wager in the battle.

3. Games do not have a time limit.

4. The winner gets to "claim" the losing players' squad.

Once the open play time has expired, players then decide on what their 100 pt squad is going to be. Every unused squad can then be "traded in" to give them a point towards initiative. Players that cannot create a 100 pt squad can choose from the squads that were traded in to complete their squad. Squads must all be from the same faction.

This tournament is three rounds of swiss pairings, using normal rules for margin of victory.

Here are the squads players will have to choose from. Some might seem a little strange, but one of the main goals of this is to break people from the lists they might otherwise default to.

Any feedback or help balancing squads would be hugely appreciated. I'd like to be able to present it all in one go. Most all of the above I own, which also opens it up to people who don't have models/cards. It's a small club, so I'm comfortable loaning it out.

lol everyone is gonna default to the B-Wing, TIEx1, Outrider, Expose-cimator and Whisper.

If you're gonna limit points, you should actually limit them to the suggested cost or raise each list by 5 points to offer a fair edge in list building.

I also don't like this idea as a tournament style, casual it seems like fun, but for tournament play things seem a little too jumbled for people to optimize their play style, especially in a game of X-Wing where list building is pretty much the basis of competitive play. It sort of reminds of the Draft format in MtG, you can luck out and pull bombs and efficient cards or fail miserably because you're not used to the cards you were dealt. Works for CCGs and stuff, not sure how I feel about it in an open-access game.

I was expecting something like, If you win you get to chop of your opponents head and yell "their can only be one!"

Whoops, forgot to mention in my first post that squads can only be picked once. In other words, only one person in the tournament can fly Whisper. Also, this is definitely meant to be a casual tournament meant to welcome anyone who's interested in X-Wing. One of my goals is to get more people in the club to actually play X-Wing, as there are a number of people who come to play other games. I figure there's no sense hogging all this addiction to myself.

Works if there are enough people and they have the ships you listed with the upgrade cards. I'd prefer to just have a single ship 35 pt limit with everyone on the same board at once. no asteroids.

It's a cool concept -- I'd love to hear how it works out!
