How often do you play a list before you retire it?

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

I am just wondering.

I was at a tournament a little while back and one guy just dominated it with a two falcon list. Sure two falcons can be tuff, but that wasn't why this list dominated so much. He had played and fined tuned this list to death. He really knew how to fly this list to take maximum advantage of his two ships and their synergy (It was Lando and Chewie).

There are a couple of lists that I have played a few times. I really like my Et'han, Outrider, A-wing list. But I like all the stuff so much that I always want to try new things. I know this makes me less competitive as a player, but I play for fun, more than to win.

I am not saying their is a right or wrong way to play this game. In fact I don't think there is. I am just wondering how many times do you play a list before you just want to move onto something new.

Once.

Seriously, though: there's so many interesting combinations that I don't think I've ever played the same list twice.

Edit: I should clarify that I'm not a tourney player.

I took the same list to two tourneys in a row, both competitive with prizes, mostly because I didn't have time in the 2 weeks between them to practice with anything else.

Otherwise I try to take something new to every tourney. But considering I won both of those tourneys, I'm very tempted to take that list with me to this my regional tourney as well...

For friendly games, I suppose once every so often. I find some lists are quite fun to play and will fly them again every so often, maybe once every 5-10 games or something.

At League night I tend to fly the same list twice a nice, but sometimes I will bring both a Imperial and Rebel list. But so far I haven't played the same list more than one night there.

Once i don't need to use the same list over and over, sometimes i might use a minor variation but most of the time i take something new each week so i'm unpredictable.

Usually stale by game 6 or 7. There's just too much other neat stuff to play.

It's all going to depend on the list, it's effectiveness, what's available including what's new. I'd also wonder how much tweaking one has to do to really consider it a different list because we all have some that have an upgrade or two that can be changed without altering the overall performance although it may change the performance against certain opponents.

I'd never hold it against someone who constantly plays the same list or at most minor variations on that list. I can see many reason for doing that as they can be financial, personal, or based on time constraints.

I keep the same base list (Z-95 swarm) and change up the backup on how well it works.

It depends on what my objective is. For the regionals, I tweaked and then trained with the same list for over 2 months, including 3 store tournaments. During casual nights (where I could sneak in 2 or 3 games), I would play one fun list to warm up and then bring up my competition list for practice.

Now that the regional is done, however, I'll put it on the backburner. I'll set a new challenge instead and see if I can conjur another list and way of flying that can be just as deadly :)

... but my dual ion IG will remain, waiting to haunt my local meta again :)

Are you the guy who made Top 8 in Sherbrooke with a dual IG+Ion list?

Does it count as the same list if the same 47 point Rexler Brath keeps finding new groupies?

Usually until my first major loss that makes the squad feel completely useless, even if bad dice are involved, or until I realize the squad is barely squeezing out wins rather than winning with ease.

I rarely fly the same list more than 2 or 3 times. Probably the reason why I haven't done so well in tournaments. I'm usually going into one with some new.

If it's just to try out, a few times. Maybe 5 at most to really see if something works or not.

Once I have a list I like flying, I'll play it whenever I like. I did retire my tourney list from last year though and have a new one for this year. Try and come up with a new list for each tourney season.

I really enjoy RAC/Fel and have won my last two tournaments with it. I'm confident the local guys are tired of it so I will retire it from that venue. I'm looking for something new to take to regionals since it looks like that list is becoming too common.

Until it gets stomped by some dumb broken power combo.

I'm starting to just fly 72 points of swarm ships and one 28 point ship like a Lambda or ORS. The 28 point ship changes every time.

I want so badly to stick with a list and REALLY master it... But I have way too many fun ideas and I keep wanting to try out new combos and builds! I'm cursed with curiosity!!! Gahh!

I don't know. I do try to get a list before a major tournament and try to play it for at least half my games for a month or two. Beyond that, I change it up quite a bit. I'll kick a list around for a couple weeks with tweaks and such until something else catches my eye.

When I decided that I want to try Panick Attack, it took me about a month and a half to collect all the cards for it.

Then I went straight to the tournament, done 5-0 and won the tournament.

There was a second tournament in 3 weeks, but again no time to practice the list or invent something else, so took the same list, done 4-2 and took the second place.

So 11 matches, 9-2 score and I really like the list. I like the challenge B-wing's dial gives and I like the control option, as our meta had no control lists before.

There was no list, I couldn't defeat, as both losses were against lists I have defeated another time.

But I feel I already need something else, despite how I love this list. And it's really difficult now to find something cool, as I'm afraid the list will not be as fun as Panick Attack and I would feel dirty if I took some mainstream lists although I would really like to try how dual IG or RAC/Fel works on the table...

Legitimate LOL moment.

I never play a list more than once unless I'm locked into it at a tournament.

I have two lists I fly competitively, simply because they are fun and challenging. I begun playing the game when Wave 2 came out, played only one specific list with three A-wings until Wave 4, took a break, made a new 3 A-wing list when Rebel Aces got out and have played that one since, and now with Wave 6 a Dual IG list. Between tournaments I mix between practice those two lists and trying various lists for fun.

up until this season, I would maybe fly something twice- if a tournament came around, I would usually fly whatever I had flown last essentially since it was fresh on my mind

I still have more lists ideas then time to fly so I change pretty much. But info have one list that holds its own vs the dominant ship builds out there that I've gotten comfortable with and has done well in the tourney scene. So that's my go to regional list right now. I may change half way through regional season if I get frustrated with my performance in the first one I go to.

Straight away. Don't think I've flown the same list twice, intentionally anyway, always tinkering.
