How often do you play a list before you retire it?

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

I exclusively flew Vessery+LW+HLC, Echo+VI+ACD+FCS+various crew, 16 point filler (settling on a naked bomber) for about six months, including the first 4 of 5 store championships I was able to attend.

That includes a small handful of local tournaments, FLGS x-wing nights, games with friends, etc. I'd guess in the ballpark of 50 games, plus or minus a dozen.

In the end, the combination of the phantom nerf and the defender not being able to withstand early game concentrated fire resulting in retiring the list before the end of store championships (and sure enough that last store championship was the one I did the best at).

until i get bored of it, or people can easily beat it, or i see something better.

I don't ever see the full potential of a list and its slight variations until at least 2 or 3 games in.

Until I get bored or I've decided it's terrible. On average it takes 2 games with a list for me to decide if it's terrible or not. I will rarely judge a list after only a single game with it. I play about 5 games a week, 2-3 at the LGS on Monday nights and 1-2 on Vassal, in addition to whatever games I might play at a tournament on the weekend.

Mostly though I tinker with the same chunks of a list in different configurations. For a while I was experimenting a lot with Prototypes in 45 and 60 point chunks with other 55 and 40 points ships. Right now I'm experimenting with Daredevil Vader in different lists.

I've been playing Dash/Corran for almost 3 months now in prep for Regionals, with 30 games played (that I've written down), and I'm still not bored. The list is very much my style of having high mobility and highly consistent damage, and I'm constantly discovering new lines and new tricks with the list, and have found the list to have strong match-ups against the majority of the meta. I adopted the list after I fell in the love with playing the YT-2400 and played a lot of games with different lists involving that ship but not being able to find a build I liked, and then losing in the finals of a winter tournament to another player's Dash/Corran list.

The only other list that I've played for more than 5 games is my 4x Obisidian + Patrol Leader w/ Vader & Gunner. It's a list that I play when I want to win without looking like I'm trying too hard, or when I don't want to think too hard.

Hard to say. Usually I can decide if something I've drafted up is good within a game or two, or if it just needs some refinement. I've been playing dual Aggressor for coming up on 2 months now and am not really tired of flying them just yet. I certainly don't win every game with them, but they're just silly fun to fly. I will probably stick with them until the TIE Advanced fix drops. Not much else out there interests me at the moment aside from the StarViper (which I have dabbled with a little bit for kicks).

I want so badly to stick with a list and REALLY master it... But I have way too many fun ideas and I keep wanting to try out new combos and builds! I'm cursed with curiosity!!! Gahh!

That's usually how I feel...

But I'm totally gonna get more practice with my TIE Bombers! Local meta won't know what hit em'!

Only time I've flown the same list multiple times in a row is for the league. Of course, I still have ships I haven't flown in a 100 point game (My local store does a lot of small free-for-alls), and I haven't flown my falcon at all yet.

Ive been flying almost only Soontir RAC since Feburary, I feel I continue to get better with a list the more I play it to death. Admitted I've always like repetition so flying a list ive flown in 25+ games is something I almost always want.

The number of lists I've played more than once is slim, but I always keep coming back to Corran in various configurations. He's definitely my favourite ship to fly at the moment.

If I've beaten everyone I play with without loosing a ship then I retire that list. I play casually with friends of various skill levels, so grinding faces into dirt is not the objective.

I give a list 2-3 tries and change some minir details if i have the opportunity, and if it's really disappointing i discard it. If i see potential in it i will fine tune it and perhaps take it to a tournament.

In general, it depends why I'm flying the list; if I'm looking to have fun, I might pick some pilots or a faction I don't normally play, and go from there. Sometimes, that means adding further constraints like trying to fly certain ships or pilots together. I generally don't fly these lists too much longer than one or two games, but the process of experimentation involved in playing the "fun" lists has lead to the creation of my tournament lists.

Once I have a tournament list concept I play with it a lot, usually just tweaking upgrades, but occasionally replacing a whole ship (or two) if they aren't working well as a whole. My most played lists are definitely my tournament lists, and generally, it takes new releases and new options, for me to retire one of them. However, that isn't to say that I don't return to an old list now and again; I built these lists to be both fun and competitive, and I can certainly enjoy them again with some appropriate match-ups. I try not to discourage others from playing the game by bringing a competitive list when they're looking for a more casual and fun game.

It depends on what my objective is. For the regionals, I tweaked and then trained with the same list for over 2 months, including 3 store tournaments. During casual nights (where I could sneak in 2 or 3 games), I would play one fun list to warm up and then bring up my competition list for practice.

Now that the regional is done, however, I'll put it on the backburner. I'll set a new challenge instead and see if I can conjur another list and way of flying that can be just as deadly :)

... but my dual ion IG will remain, waiting to haunt my local meta again :)

Are you the guy who made Top 8 in Sherbrooke with a dual IG+Ion list?

Yep, that was me! It was a fun tournament, but I totally ran out of steam by the time that I reached the semi-final. I could no longer see angles or even count dices straight. My fault for not packing enough healthy snacks ;)

EDIT: the only thing I regretted was that aside from a single opponent, I ended up playing only against people from my area. I would have really loved to play against a few other people. Really loved the custom shirts from the group from Quebec city (they were awesome!) :)

Yeah I've got several lists that win losing only a few shields that I won't take anymore there's no fun to be had from a one sided game.

I'm only just about to play my second tournament later this month. I'm bringing a completely different list from last time (I placed 2nd with a Han/WSF list)

It was a great list, I'd play-tested it to bits, but I didn't want to go into the tournament this time with ANOTHER double YT list. It just felt like it would be boring

For casual play, If I'm not play-testing a tourney list, I'll bring a new list every time. I often show up with two (or three if they share similar ships) squads ready to go. I find there's just so much variation available that you never see it all without playing it.
