I definitely planned on do this very thing.
In fact, IIRC, vader's x-1 prototype never went into full production. Instead, the TIE avenger was chosen over vader's TIE.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.
Has the Avenger made it into the new "canon of the week..."
Pretty sure that was ret-conned. Read somewhere that the TYIE/Int was the production model derived from the Tie/X program.
Based on the TIE Fighter game, the Avenger was produced in limited quantities for elite squadrons (they were too pricey to be mass-produced for the use of the "scrub" pilots), while the Interceptor was mass-produced for general usage (and was, if I recall right, eventually intended to supersede/replace standard TIE's as attrition occured). Both designs owed their lineage to the testing the X1 underwent.
Defender production was even more limited, and was reserved for the best of the best.
In both cases, Avenger and Defender, production ran into trouble with both rebel and internecine (Admiral Zaarin) attacks jeopardizing the manufacturing facilities.
