100 points is where it's at.
Tired of the 100 point game
My store has done a few 150 point tournaments. And it was a nice change. We did increase the time a little. Other then one guy flying all tie fighters. Always that one guy. Most games did not last over an hour. Maybe adding a rule that everyone has one big ship to avoid mass tie / bandit builds would help mix things up a bit. Or possible a format 1 big 4 small ships. minimum. I feel with more points swarms just get a bigger advantage. Yet I won the tournament with 3 imperial firesprays.
100 points is great but it would be nice to have a verity. One thing I like about Imperial Assault. At least now they finally added debree.
I'm with Gadge especially wrt the forums. My gaming circle consists of 9. Seven of us own ships with 4 of us being the most passionate. I am the only one that frequents the boards. We play XXXpt battles where so far that point range is anywhere between 075 to 600.
I'll still play 100 point battles, but I just really like the thematic aspect of X-Wing, and that is really enhanced when you have a ton of ships on the board.
I play 150-point tourneys at the store I go to as well. It opens up build possibilities a lot, but it's not an obscene amount of dials/tokens/crashing into ships. Usually you see 4-6 ships with 150, it seems to pull the swarmers out of their niche of flying all-generics and allows for more unique pilots on the board... and of course more upgrades. It gives you the freedom to really deck out a ship or two with upgrades while still keeping 4+ ships on the map. And yeah, it doesn't actually take much longer than 100 pt games at all. I really enjoy 150.

If you're going for thematic play, scenarios are the way to go. Putting more ships on the table is visually impressive, and often fun, but rarely thematic, I find.
100 point games are still the best. The game is setup to make list decisions hard at the 100 point level.
300 Point Epic games are really a blast too though. The problem is that they take a long time to setup, play, and clean up. You are looking at 3.5 hours minimum with setup and play time to get an Epic game in. Finding time on a casual game night to play a 300 point Epic game requires commitment. I've done it a number of times, but you can't dilly dally.
The largest game I played was a 1500 point scenario. There were like 4 Transports, 2 Corvettes, 10 Rebel fighters, and 30 Imperial fighters. The game looked impressive, but 5 hours later, very few things were actually dead and it became a chore to actually play the game and was no longer fun.
I think anything more than the 300 point Epic game seriously risks becoming a chore to play and will become unfun. When you realize it takes 30 minutes just to move all the ships and evaluate all the bump positions per turn, your enthusiasm for a 1000 point game this will evaporate.
what do you think about 100 and 120 points game but with free upgrades ??
i tried this a couple of times and it isn't bad...
It's a shame we don't have a casual campaign and scenario Vassal scene really.
I played a 601 vs. 601 point match against a friend last Sunday....it took about 7 hours - we stuck to mostly generics with a few 'hero' ships and played only ships and pilots from the Endor space battle. I got beaten handily but it was a lot of fun.
On my side I had one CR90, one GR75, one YT1300, 4 x-wings, 4 a-wings, 3 b-wings and 3 y-wings. He had 3 lambda shuttles, 10 TIE interceptors, 10 TIE fighters, 3 TIE bombers and 2 TIE advanced (I'm not sure if there were any in that battle but we had to fill out his list and we'd already used our combined total of TIE fighters and interceptors). I loaded up almost all of my ships with ordnance (as did he for his bombers and advanced)...were I to play another battle this size I would pass on all of the ordnance and use the points to add another fighter or two. Almost all of my fighters got their torpedoes and missiles off before getting destroyed but they were largely ineffective (bad dice rolling on my part is partially to blame). At the end we had each taken out 17 ships...only trouble was he still had 11 remaining.
Its a massive shame that this type of board doesnt allow polls to be made as i'd be interested in finding out
1) What points value games people play
2) Percentage of people (PoP) who have played at least one scenario
3)Percentage of players who have played several scenarios
4) PoP who use house rules
5) Pop who have attended a store or county tournament
6) Pop who are not interested in organised play
7) Age of players
8) gender of players
9) Players who only play on vassal
etc etc
Obvioulsy the poll would give me skewed results towards tourny play given the content of most threads but i'd love to do some 'market research' on who is playing xwing , and how?
I think the focus on 100 point dogfights really skews the game, and sucks a bit of the fun out of it. Some more missions (especially incorporated into tournaments) would really add a lot of flavour into the game.
But i also think that we see a disproportionate amount of love for 100/6 on here.
This seems to be *the* forums to hyper analyse ships in excrutiating detail and hence you get this whole 'meta' thing that really only actually applies to a tiny percentage of players (and fair play its important to them as they pay money to enter a compo and they want to have the best chance of winning).
People who experiment with the game, make up house rules, do wacky stuff and just have *another* type of fun with the games and the expansions dont really need to come here as they dont need to have an absolute ruling on a situation as they are playing their mate or their wife or their brother and its really not important who wins
I think the 'focus on dogfights' is appearing to be a thing because its a thing on here if you get me.
FFG clearly dont consider it to be the main way to play the game because if you buy a large ship or core set you get 'scenarios' included... you dont get an essay on the most efficient way to play those ships.
You actually get great ideas on how to play games that are often far removed from 100/6
There is nothing wrong with 100/6 but it is , as i may have said before, like owning a paint set and only using red if you only ever play that way.

Is there a forum for those types of people?
There may be but i doubt they'd use it if there was given they dont need to know the current 'meta' or the 'jousting effiecieny' of a ship and just play the stuff they think looks cool and choose cards that are fun ![]()
When I asked FFG for the sub forums we have now one of the suggestion i put forwards i think was a 'tournament play' section for the ultra competetive top tier organised play debates about 'this is OP' or 'this is broken' etc as it was getting ridiculous that there would be eight seperate threads on the phantom or fat han being a problem in tournaments at any one time,
Im still very glad we got painting, off topic and squad building though.
But you know look at it objectively, if you're new to this game and come here just to rave about how cool it is what tends to happen is people tell you 'yeah we know, there is already a thread about it
' and you see no end of posts telling you that X, Y or Z (no pun intended) 'needs a fix' or is 'unplayable'
The overall impression you get from the front page is that its all about 100 point 6 rock tournament gaming, but as i say thats skewed because this forum attracts those who 'need to know' updates , do need to know about what the best and most effiecient combos are. There is nothing wrong with that at all.
Im just saying if you play the game on the kitchen table with your house mates at uni then you're probably not really looking for much more out of the game than that.
I wish we could poll this forum to find out what sort of players were playing the game in what way.
It would be interesting to know.
Hehe ... I already thought about a big base with up to 4 small-based ships on it, representing a 'close formation' ...
but I'm not sure about the rules yet.
Pick all identical PS for the ships or they have a higher PS squqd leader and they just have to stay in formation moving when he does! Im liking where this is going!!!
I never cared for 100 point games, and have been playing 151 and 200 point games since about wave 2.
I don't see the need to increase the play area either. 200 points on 3x3 is fine.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I've been playing so much Armada lately, but I really think X-Wing would be so much more fun to just line up a TON of ships and do 300, 400, even 500 point battles with the only rule being that you should try to play quickly.
I'm sure once the Raider hits it will allow alot more fun types of epic play, but to me, I'm really gravitating more towards huge battles lately and less towards a small 100 point battles. I mean dang, I've got 2-4 of every ship they've ever released... why not field them ALL!?!?! Anyone else feel similar?
random point games would be cool. with random ships as well..
I DO want to see some more Escalation tournaments now that Scum and new rules are out. There will be a lot of neat builds now that Fat Turrets the obvious go to (at least round 1).
The thing that always keeps me coming back to tournament rules is that it's an expected way to play. I know the rules, and my opponent knows the rules. I think I'd like to try out more different styles, but even for Epic and Team Epic, I tend to fall back on the Tournament Rules sheet so there is some standard.
My absolute favorite part about Epic Play is having fighter groups with different tasks. It's awesome for Biggs to escort bombers to their target, instead of protecting other elite fighters. It's great to have TIE interceptors actually, you know, having something to intercept. It's this kind of thing that makes it feel thematic to me.
On a side note, I find that it's easier for me to cover for multiple list types with Epic Play. For example, if swarms are giving me problems I can throw in an Assault Missiles or two. For Imperials I like to trade out Push the Limit for Ruthlessness on a couple of my Saber Squadron Pilots. Bombs sure do some damage, too. It doesn't take a lot to be adaptable.
The thing that always keeps me coming back to tournament rules is that it's an expected way to play.
This is why I think it needs to become standard for tournaments to include scenarios other than just dogfighting.
Yeah i mean 40k Grand tournaments used to at one point have you roll a die to decide which mission you were playing IIRC which was great as it meant you had to take a list capable of taking on multiple tasks rather than one trick ponies.
Im sure they used to do that, its been a very very long time since i ran a GT for GW.

they have the same thing in Warmachine/hordes Steamroller formats
there are several competitive scenarios that are chosen per game based on several random dice rolls. This ensures that not only can you not get away with just pewpewing from the deployment zone, but that you have to be able to tackle a whole variety of situations and survive in all manner of positions.
In fact, it's not competitive Warmachine or even really fun Warmachine without scenarios ![]()

2) Percentage of people (PoP) who have played at least one scenario maybe half?
3)Percentage of players who have played several scenarios less than half
4) PoP who use house rules you and I and a few of our friends here
5) Pop who have attended a store or county tournament about half, cause so many people buy the game and have no interest in being a gamer type
6) Pop who are not interested in organised play about half?
7) Age of players 20 to 50 prolly
8) gender of players 75% male
9) Players who only play on vassal 20% tops
etc etc

We play 150 casuals. Have been pretty much since wave 2.
100 points is ok for timed tournament to limit play and maneuver time.
But 150 points is way more fun. You get to add that one ship you wanted and deck out the ships you do have. Seriously how often do you even use more than 1-2 upgrades on ships in 100 point games? Not that often due to lack of points. Its fun to actually deck out the ships with the equipment they are designed for. I have spent thousands of dollars on this game. Feels good to actually be able to use the upgrade cards.
