Can Etahn A'baht's ability apply to other ships?

By Millennium Falsehood, in X-Wing

Before you think I forgot everything I know about how to interpret the card text, this question comes from my friend who is convinced that the way Etahn's card text should be interpreted is that all ships attacking a ship in his firing arc also gain access to his piloting ability. I say that his ability only affects himself, because if it applied to other ships it would have the phrase "all friendly ships" in there somewhere.

So who's correct?

Edited by Millennium Falsehood

Your friend (if he means all the ships on the same side as Etahn

Absolutely it is any ship attacking. Really Etahn is effecting enemy ships that are being attacked, who the attacker is doesn't matter.

You want to really blow your mind.... In a 3 player game his ability will work on an enemy even if it us a different enemy attacking and Etahn and his allies are just bystanders.

It applies to all friendly ships. It procs whenever an enemy ship within his firing arc is defending. If it was meant only for Etahn, it would say "Etahn may change a hit result..." rather than "the attacker may change..."

Huh. Well, alrighty then. :) Thanks for clearing that up.

Your friend (if he means all the ships on the same side as Etahn

It applies to all friendly ships.

Nothing on the card limits it to friendly ships. In a 2 player/team game it is not possible to have a ship that isn't on Etahn's side attacking an enemy ship, but in a multi player free for all, Etahn is going to create all sorts of havoc because he will trigger when anybody attacks anybody but his side (and they meet his other conditions, of course).

Okay, of course I didn't take into account that we were playing/talking about multiplayer games of X-Wing. Nor did I mean to offend the huge tournament scene of people doing Furball while fielding Etahn.

For this I am sorry. Terribly sorry. Devastated on the brink of utter humiliation

WTF man? It's an incredibly common rules interaction for people to miss. It is also a lot of fun. And 2 people in the space of 1 minute seemed to miss it so it seemed like a good idea to emphasize it.

Chill.

Think of it as this way. He gives every friendly ship, when they are targeting an enemy in his firing arc, a mangler cannon.

Unless they already have one, then he gives them... another one?

Very true

One of my current favorite lists: My friends hate this list

Eto Mangloz

Etahn, r3-a2, outmaneuver, FCS, Hull Upgrade

B-wing Blue, Mangler, B-wing E-2, Tactician

B-wing Blue, Mangler, B-wing E-2, Tactician

100 pts

Roll out the critical s and stress!!!

For all the cool things Coran can do Et'han has may favorite special ability. Do you know who really hates him, those big turret ships. I fought a decimator who had to deal with 7 different crits before it finally died. I think the player was happy to see his ship finally go with all those crits.

Try Et'han + VI + Sensor Jammers

Rookie Pilot x3

Sure you could probably adjust the list to use B-Wings, but X-wings fit perfectly and I just like'em.

If you fly proper anti-turret tactics (IE everyone engages or everyone get's out of range) you trade 4 3 attack dice attacks for 1. Sure your first attack will probably be rendered ineffective by Fat Han's defensive upgrades, but the other three should probably be able to strip the shields pretty fast. After that its crit, crit, crit.

I find critting big ships is more effective than say TIEs. If the crit doesn't just turn a almost dead TIE into a dead TIE, then the TIE will probably not live much longer anyway, so the number of turns it has to be hampered by the crit is minimal. The same is not true of a high Hull ship like a Falcon.

Funny! That is one of the exact other lists I fly with Ethan. but with all the big ships, and autothruster interceptors, I find the b's being able to barrel roll and give stress when needed work better than the X-wings.

As a decimator pilot, I fear Etahn just about more than anything else I could see on the other side of the board.

I've wondered what to fly with Eathn to strike such fear into decis

back when I ran four Zs, they just popped and Eathn had to 1v1 the decimator to death

but I guess that was pre errata phantom

Et'han is so good that since he came out I have turned into a rebel player. I used to be TIEs all the way, but I just love Et'han.

For me, the worst was a bunch of Bs, but just about anything would do.

guess'll do the same thing I do for every rebel build

Ace + bsp + bsp + prototype

Eathn (sensors, ptl, r2 astro)

Blue Squadron

Blue Squadron

Prototype (Refit)

[Total: 98]

**** those 2 points are going to trigger my OCD hard

Click now for one ship that will completely change your tournament results! Big ships HATE him!

E'tan R2-D2, Sensor Jammer, Draw their Fire

Biggs R4-D6

Luke R5-P9 Draw their fire

Keep the crits off of Biggs and stay in formation and it makes for some tough to kill fun.

Last week, My Eto Mangloz (posted in an earlier thread) list ripped holes through a Chirpy. (Yes I hate that word too)

He had no shields and I was dropping 3 and 4 crits a turn on him. Even though he had the Moff and Intel agent combo. Fun indeed! Plus some of the shots were range two so I stressed him, and I got whisper with my Etahn stress bot. Fun, Fun!

As I outlined in another thread, I like Etahn with 3 rookie pilots. This might be a case where the X-Wing is preferable over the B-Wing and the Z-95. Attacking with 3 dice gives you a better chance of those crits actually finding their mark, and the dial of the X and E are very similar, making it easier to keep the bunch in formation (if you want that). And the cheaper X-Wing frees some points to make Etahn tougher or a less attractive target.

Alternately, pop Autothrusters on to that Prototype or trade R2 up to R2-D2.
