New Tournament Format

By charlesanakin, in X-Wing

I already have a pretty good understanding of the ships and upgrades in the game, but list-building is part of the game and it's a huge part of my enjoyment. I wouldn't be interested in a tournament format that takes that away from me.

Vorpal I don't know you so I'm not sure what type of individual lists you play in tournaments or if you even play in tournaments at all? However the current tournament list selection paradigm seems to be about 75% of, first, eliminate Scum, then do I use BBBBZ or a fat turret? Most of the time that's as creative as tournament list building gets. Maybe you're one of the few the proud X(izor)YYZ tourney players?

Here's the list I took to two Store Championships:

Kavil (24)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Blaster Turret (4)

R4 Agromech (2)

Syndicate Thug (18)

Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Unhinged Astromech (1)

BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Unhinged Astromech (1)

BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Cartel Spacer (14)

"Mangler" Cannon (4)

"Heavy Scyk" Interceptor (Cannon) (2)

Total: 99

And here's the list I took to last week's Regionals in Tulsa:

Kath Scarlet (Scum) (38)

Veteran Instincts (1)

K4 Security Droid (3)

Inertial Dampeners (1)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Mandalorian Mercenary (35)

Predator (3)

Tactician (2)

Binayre Pirate (12)

Total: 99

I don't know if I'll take the same list to the Independence, MO Regional event in June. If I switch, it'll be to a Rebel control list with Y-wings and B-wings; I won't be running fat turrets, because they don't really interest me.

I am pretty sure he was talking about a casual tournament idea, for fun, not for "FFG Official Competitive play". All I am saying is, it isn't meant to be "fair" for everyone, but just a fun idea, and would be neat when players are forced to play Under-Dog squads and win an event with them.

That's pretty much exactly what I am saying. Bring in some ships and lists that aren't part of what comprises 75% of what tournament lists are now. I'm not suggesting that people take a random list to regionals (although I do think that would benefit the overall health of the game). I'm suggesting this would be a fun alternative.

Some of your comments have made me think about a possible addition to the idea. TOs would have the ability to make complete lists or partial points lists and give the player the freedom to spend any unused portion of points. Players could also be allowed to submit creative lists for the tournament (1 per player please) then at the TOs discretion they could choose to use the lists and which round to use them in. That way maybe you fly your list to victory or maybe you have a bad game but you watch someone else fly your original list to victory.

I enjoy list building, I really really do. In fact I probably spend twice as much time list building as playing. I also deeply enjoy the unknown, the adaptation, the versatility and raw skill need to be good with something new to you and the dynamic change that comes with shaking things up. What's more gratifying than taking something that isn't yours and winning with it.

A good way to see more varied builds is to play a "pick your poison" event. You play your fleet on odd rounds, and your opponent's fleet on even numbered rounds. Alternatively, if you have a lot of players, play your fleet for the first few rounds. Then top 16 (or whatever number) advance to playoffs. In the playoffs you play your opponent's fleet.

This format encourages you to build something that other players have a lot of trouble flying, but is strong when you fly it. You have to know your squad's weaknesses and its strengths to do well.

What if you were given 3 ships types, and 3 upgrades. You had to use 2 of each three. It would force you to shake things up, but you still get to build. In fact it would provide a new list building challenge.

Interesting idea Red G. Maybe put all the lists for all the players in a hat and draw out at random and that's the lists you play? After each round all the winning lists go back into the hat for another random draw among the winners. I really like some iteration of that idea.

I really like that idea too. The only concern would be making sure the upgrades were allowable for the ships. That could easily be accomplished by drawing the ships first, then eliminating any non-applicable upgrade cards.

The only reason I win games is because I practice a lot with my squads so... Eff that. IMHO.

When I play a list for the first time, I'm confidant it looks like I've never played the game before. It takes a lot of trial and error for me to learn how to play a new list competently.

I can relate to that. I do feel that playing with lists/ships that are new to me help me more overall as a player than the same old list I'm comfortable with. Even if I do lose a lot as I'm improving as an complete player.

I think new ships improve big skills like flying various ships, formation depending on the list, obstacle avoidance, etc. I think having to focus on those so hard detracts from training more fine grained skills like action efficiency, optimal engagement bands, and turn 0 strategy, which you hone with a list in which flying the actual ships is familiar.

I'd be up for an event like this. Although I don't think I would want to spend much money to enter and I wouldn't want to miss out on swag from a tournament kit because I was flying a list I didn't know. For a casual night among friends it sounds like a nice change of pace.

I've thought of something similar. But instead of going back and forth, you just fly your opponents list. So you want to build something that's absolutely sucks. I think it would be pretty fun.

That format is solved, 6 Rebel Operative HWKs with Leia Organa would be OP.
