Spring Kit has extra swag

By GroggyGolem, in X-Wing

So the Spring kit that came into my LGS has 5 dice bags. Not sure what to make of that other than hey, more swag!

Also, I have a question. In what way would it be the most fair to players to distribute the Kit? The obvious is 1 alt art PtL for the top 17, dice bags for the top 4 (or 5 in this case?), acrylic range rulers and alt art Tycho for top 2 and then the Medal for the winner?

What happens if our tournament is somewhat smaller, say around 6-10 players?

Then you eBay it to milk the tryhards who'll never win such loot honestly of course.

Sometimes they give an extra thing for the TO. Regionals lists alt art card and dice for the TO. Maybe it's for that purpose?

It's been my understanding that the 'extra' stuff(17th PTL, 2nd Tycho, etc.) are meant for the TO, though can obviously be used however you'd like. The Store Championship kit pages are more explicit about this kind of thing, with wording like "Top 4: whatever prize(plus 1 for the TO)".

Oh, the extra swag is for me. Well, I'll be participating in the tournament as well as our secondary TO. Not sure how to go about this. Probably a better idea that I not take extra swag and participate for prizes. If we get enough players, maybe I will just back out of the tournament and just TO.

Well like I said, you can always toss them in the prize pool. I think the Store/Regional champ kit pages are more explicit because TOs are discouraged from participating at those events.

I get that. I do fully intend to run Store Championships here eventually, obviously not participating in those. We just recently started the group and it's slowly growing. Currently we have only 4 regulars but we continue to get interested ones over to try out the game. Figured that 6 is a really reasonable amount of players that we would get, considering we only have 4 meeting on a regular basis.

Hm. I could just pass down any extra swag I get in the tournament to the next player that didn't get it. Would that seem fair?

That would be very fair. The main thing IMO is consistency, either give them out for the same reasons every time or at the very least say who gets what before the event starts. Moving the goalposts on players can make them nuts (happens to me all the time at work, so when I go to an event and the prize structures change on me and I miss out on a prize I can get a bit grumpy... mostly this was an Attack Wing issue (see below)).

From the Attack Wing perspective, there were often 3 prizes per kit. One for the winner, one for the TO, and the last one for "Fellowship" award, which was essentially at the TO's discretion. Often they were given to 2nd place, raffled away to a random player as a door prize for playing, or sometimes even given to a brand new player who was using the same faction as the prize just to motivate them a bit to keep playing. In some cases the TO would always find a random excuse to give the consolation prize to the same person, who happened to be a close friend of theirs

Question just to be sure. Is the second Range Ruler and Tycho Alt Art supposed to be for the 2nd place player or for the TO?

The TO gets the 17th PTL, top 16 get a PTL (or if there's less they can give some extras out), top 4 gets bags and 1st and 2nd get range ruler and tycho.

Thanks. I plan to use any of the left over PtL cards for another tournament before we get a hold of the Summer Kit. Probably charge the same amount for entry in the second tournament to go towards store credit to make the prize support sweeter.

What I do in my seasonal tournaments is, distribute the PtL evenly (if 8 or less players they get multiple) then at the end of the tournament 1st place gets the medal and there pick of any 1 of the prizes, be it the alt art card, an acrilic set, or even the poster that comes with, then 2nd place picks and so on down the list until your out of prizes or everyone e has picked in which case 1st place gets another prize. The extra PtL I bundle together as a single prize someone can pick, as well as any extra cash for entry, $25 to buy the kit so i recoup my $20 (the extra 5 being my own entry) and any extra becomes yet another possible prize choice

Different TOs put out the Swag in different ways.

I've also seen the winner get the medal, the card, and the ruler. 2nd place gets his choice of card or ruler. 3rd gets the other one. Then dice bags on the way down.

Our TO also savs the poster and uses that as a SWAG prize or special prize (if not, I usually ask for it...I frame them and hang them on the kids bedroom walls; Imp for The Girl, Rebel for The Boy; since they love playing too).

If you have a small turnout (8 or less) you can either give out 2 cards each or save the cards and use them as entrance prizes for your local league/Gaming Group. You can also hold them in the event you have a larger event and end up with more people than prizes...sort of a consolation prize.

Suffice to say, the only wrong way is if the TO hoards all the good stuff for himself (which I have NEVER seen happen). But running the event, even if its small and your playing in it...you deserve a little something for doing that and keeping the game going.

My daughter went to a Store champ and they did that. She ended up with a Soontir card, 3 Bomber cards, and 2 cloak tokens.

I made 1st round of Top 8 and got a dice bag (which is a silly prize for a game with at most 12 dice...but The Boy liked it when I gave it to him) and the Soontir card. On the way home she remarked how she got more (and better) loot than I got.

Lucky door prize, for each $10 spent in the store that day you get a ticket, prize for best painted ship, sportsmanship award, wooden spoon award (coming last), best Metal Bikini costume, etc.

Lots of options.
