Titles are great.
Having choices of which title to equip is the best, though.
Currently, the only standard play multi-title ship is the Firespray.
Which is cool. Taking Andrasta means you can't take Extra Munitions. Taking Slave I means you could take EM, or something like Flechette Torpedoes.
For most Firespray pilots, the choice of which title to pick doesn't make much difference.
But to a number of other ships, it sure could.
The TIE Interceptor loves having two modifications.
But does it love having two modifications so much that it would pass up on...
181st Squadron Pilot
TIE Interceptor only. Title.
You may treat all 1 speed maneuvers as green.
3 points.
Many people have proposed an X-Wing fix via a title, and I don't intend to step into that territory, but we can also look at the other ships that have needed some love with this.
HWK-2000
HWK-290 only. Title.
Increase your primary weapon value by 2.
2 points.
ST-007
Lambda-class Shuttle only. Title.
Your upgrade bar gains the [elite pilot talent] upgrade icon, or two [torpedo] and one [missile] upgrade icons.
2 points.
And perhaps the most powerful aspect of titles is that they can single-handedly give a ship a completely new style of play.
Instead of the hard-to-kill annoyingly fat turret ship that is our current YT-1300, you could give players incentive to trim the fat by offering a powerful control/support option in its stead. (Maybe the ORS would see some play)
Lazy Katarn
YT-1300 only. Title.
Your upgrade bar loses 2 [crew] icons. Twice per round at any point during the Activation phase, you may move 1 stress token from a ship at range 1-3 to another ship at range 1-3.
2 points.
Or perhaps instead of the YT-2400 being a choice of cannons turning into turrets, you could try some novel flavors on for size.
Scarlet Star
YT-2400 only. Title.
You may equip upgrade cards to your ship that would otherwise be prohibited by the headings "Rebel only", "Imperial only", or "Scum only".
3 points.
I think that titles present the best and most exciting new areas for expanding the game's design space for FFG to explore. What I find greatest about the game are those moments in list-building when there are multiple good options to employ-- when there is no clear-cut "here is the best way to outfit this ship". Titles are a uniquely powerful way by which the game can be pushed in that direction. I'm not trying to answer the question of how to release them. I'm just saying that this is something I'd like to see more of. Do you agree? Disagree? Hate my title suggestions? Have some of your own?
