X-Wing Nationals at Gen Con posted

By GiraffeandZebra, in X-Wing

By my math, given no draws or modifieds, there will be 2 undefeateds and 11 6-1 players. That means that only the top THREE 5-2 players will make that cut.

When will we know when all the spots are full? I was hoping to wait and see how I did at regionals before deciding on nationals.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect all 200 to sell out in a couple days.

From what I heard, last year's sold out in a few minutes.

What would be interesting is if all the players who took the first round bye end up matched together in round 2. The would make for some intense matches as half of them would be on the verge of elimination come round 3.

Last year they specifically DIDN'T match byes against byes. I imagine it will be the same this year.

Not quite, but Flight 1 sold out pretty darn quick. The point is, don't wait if you want to get a spot.

Flight 1 sold out in JUST under 24hrs last year. I bought my ticket at like 22hrs afterwards, and there were 12 tickets left. I checked again at like 23.5hrs and it had 2 tickets left, and at 24 it was sold out.

I would recommend, if you are already attending Gen Con, that you just buy the ticket when registration opens. If nothing else, you are able to return the tickets up to an hour (or half hour?) before the event for 95% credit.

I was hoping for someone else to run a mini-tournament using standard rules, but it turns out no one is doing it. :(

Me too.

I wonder if we could arrange something on the side?

It isn't a tournament, but I will gladly play anyone that wants to arrange a game over private message.

Only so much room in that hall. GenCon is getting so huge now its hard for any company to get as much space in the gaming rooms as they want. I think they are heading toward making worlds their "big" event. I could see them having Worlds in a convention center up there in the next few years.

I doubt that this is the issue.

X-Wing is a flight of 200 on Thursday and Armada a flight of 100 on Friday. This means that even if they plan to use the same space for both, they have at least 100 3x3 (50 3x6) areas of space on both Thursday and Friday. Using these same quantities, they could have just split each flight in half, and had both X-Wing and Armada on Thursday and Friday and require no more space.

More likely it is personnel. Now the people serving as X-Wing TOs are not tied up on Saturday and can do other work, and Armada TOs are not tied up on Thursday and can do other work, perhaps being TOs/support for other events.

I might be mistaken, but I believe the regulation play area for Armada is 4' x 3', so they could need the extra space that 200 spaces of X-wing will now provide.

As others have pointed out, the whole play area is 6'x3'. Your confusion likely stems from the fact that within that 6'x3' Play Area there is a 4'x3' Setup Area.

Well, I guess my misguided hope that tickets wouldn't sell well due to the terrible schedule didn't pan out. 18 tickets remain as of this post.

The ticket count as of 3:37pm ET is 20 (two tickets must have been "returned").

Make that 19, I just bought mine.

4 left.

Unless I panic, chicken out, and return mine, then, I guess, 5. ;)

I'll be going as long as I don't rage quit the game after regionals

Contradiction in the email; says Saturday, August 1st is the Top 16. It's supposed to be Friday.

I got that too. I just posted something regarding the issue on the Gen Con Events forum.
Waiting for a reply. Hang tight. :-)

Sold out.

There was something funky going on with some of FFG events. I thought I would be able to play in the LCG tournament as well because in search results it showed as Friday, but when clicking through it correctly read as Thursday. I'm not sure whether that was just an issue with the beta event finder though, because the xls was correct.

Out of interest I wonder how many Regional winners will actually be able to use their byes? It seems that maybe they need to change it so Regional winners skip qualifying altogether and automatically qualify for day 2. At least the prize would be worth it that way. It seems like a lot won't be able to anymore, unless they were very forward thinking in going to Gencon.

Anyway, I have a ticket and I am really looking forward to it. Actually I'm not really, 7 or 8 rounds with a cut to top 16 is just plain unpleasant.

I'll be the one with the strange Kiwi accent.

That's not going to happen. Say only 4 regional winners make it. That only leaves 12 spots for people to advance into, which means that even going 6-1 Thursday doesn't promise you a spot. Or you can extend the number of rounds needed Friday, but what if you get an odd number of byes? Regional winners will get a first round bye, just like was promised them, and nothing more.

We did 7 rounds last year, I had no problem with it. I don't remember if I'd have qualified for top 16, although I think I would have, going 5-2.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant for the future.

It would involve having the finals not be single elims though. For example, top 32 qualify on Thursday (a grinder), plus any people who have byes automatically form a new event with Swiss rounds and appropriate cut based on the final numbers.

This year would have been my first gen con just for x-wing. There is just no way I could make a Thursday morning. So much for that.

Note, the email stated 'up to 8 75 min rounds.' Since they're sold out, I'm assuming that means 8 rounds. Assuming all 24 regional byes are used (unlikely), and a win/loss distribution (where the higher ranked player wins when paired down), there will be 1 8-0, 7 7-1, 24 6-2, 44 5-3, 55 4-4, 42 3-5, 20 2-6, 6 1-7, and one lonely 0-8. Given, we all know that people are going to drop after a few losses, so that bottom half of it is unlikely.

But this means that 8 of those 24 6-2 will make the cut. So MoV is going to be HUGE for making the top 16.

I'm hopeful they see some sense and make it top 32, which means 6-2 makes it in, but it is probably wishful thinking at this point.

They have allocated 7.5 hours to the top 16 though, so maybe?

It's probably against my better judgment, but i signed up for the National. Here's to hoping i get a lot of games in over the next 2 months...
