Victory through munitions failure?

By Stelar 7, in X-Wing

While playing Xwing this weekend I was joking to my oponent that he had better be careful with his Charadan Refit A-wings. As luck would happen he placed one where my proton bomb could get it and drew Munitions Failure.

"Immeadiately choose one of your secondary weapon upgrade cards and discard it."

Now he has to discard his secondary weapon upgrade and that was the Charadin Refit. The Awing survived, and was now two points more expensive. His list was now 102 points and therefore illegal.

After he smilingly conceeded we kept playing because that's just silly. Still I can see some folks trying to make a bigger deal of it.

Anyone else pondered this as we get more and more secondary weapon cards that are not weapons?

Charadan Refit are not secondary weapons as they do not have the ATTACK header. Even if they fill an upgrade slot that is mostly for secondary weapons not every upgrade on that slot is a secondary weapon.

Exactly. It's not the icon, it's the text. That's why you can blow away a 'Hot Shot' Blaster - despite it being an Illicit upgrade, and theoretically some attack-jamming upgrade using the ATTACK header that sits in the systems or modification slot.

You can't actually destroy a Chaardan Refit, or Extra Munitions because they're not weapons.

You can destroy an Extra Munitions ordance token, because it specifically allows you to discard that whenever you'd discard the upgrade it's attached to (not just when it's fired).

We aren't, and never will.

"Secondary weapon cards show the header 'Attack:'..." - pg. 19, Rules of Play. If it doesn't have that header, it isn't a secondary weapon and can't be discarded by the crit. The upgrade slot it fills has nothing to do with whether it is a secondary weapon or not.

We have non-weapons in traditional weapons slots, we have weapons in slots that are usually used for other things. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we get some sort of Unhinged 'Mech that is a one-shot weapon...

Even if it would work like that the list isn't illegal. The list he started with is legal and has the correct amount of points. Why would something that happens ingame change the original list he started with.

This. If you discard an upgrade with a positive points cost, it doesn't change the overall points value of the list...so why would discarding one with a negative cost do so?

"Okay, so, dodge one, one hit, one crit."

"The hit takes out my last shield, and the crit to hull...Munitions Failure."

"Okay, discard that Cluster Missile."

"Alright...now that my list is at 96 points, we are no longer tied for Initiative, so I'll be taking it."

I think my favorite part of these responses are how thoroughly they show the death of the fun casual atmosphere I loved here.

Thanks for the reference to page 19 Beard.

We were laughing all night at the silliness of the idea, didn't know about page 19 though, I figured it would be a FAQ.

Well you just represented it as a serious question so ppl answered. If you just want to tell a story thats fine, I can imagine the thought of losing because of such a silly thing beeing funny at that moment.

Could be I am not funny at 1am...

I don't know why a casual attitude and rules knowledge are mutually exclusive. You can play very relaxed and fun and still follow the rules of the game properly.

Agreed

Victory through sudden death of opponent <- also eligible in casual play

The funny thing is there ARE games won because a ship suffers a 'devastating' munition's failure. Just ask someone who manage to get within that nice, safe, donut hole of the HLC Outrider and then had the misfortune of blowing off the Cannon thus becoming subject to a primary attack with 3 dice.

Jokes may be appreciated but only if they register as jokes. The problem with 'shooting off a refit' for more points is that it is doubly illegal. You have the issue that it isn't a secondary weapon to discard and then you get the issue that a ship's value is set at the start of the game.

XD

I had 2 games in the same tournament where my Dash was able to suddenly attack with 3 dice because he took a Munitions Failure crit where he otherwise wouldn't have been able to attack that round.

I thought it was hilarious, but my opponents were less amused about it then I was.

You know you are in for a long game where it is not only the dice but your opponent's own damage cards that have cursed you!

Who want to bet your next face up card will be a direct hit! ;)
