Is it possible to use several of the same type of upgrade into the same spot on the same ship? Like 2 different crew types on the same ship?

Just one for each icon. If you had a ship card that had two Support Team icons on it, in that case you could equip two Support Team upgrade cards.

From the Upgrade Cards part of the rules: "For each upgrade icon in a ship’s upgrade bar, it may equip one upgrade card with the matching upgrade icon."

It appears it would not be able to take two of the same crew however. There's a line in the faq suggesting as much.
