xenos and cybernetics

By MisAnThropic2, in Rogue Trader

Hey guys, i just have a question about xenos-races and human cybernetics... are they able to use the same stuff?

Got a Dark Eldar in our group (...sigh) and he want some cybernetic enhancing. Can he make use of everything a human would?

Thanks!

I don't see why not. Particularly for the xenos who are basically humanoid to begin with, such as the Eldar.

There may be some need to modify the technobabble excuses for why it works, but if they can make it work for humans, they should be able to make it work for anyone.

Highly different xenos (like Tyranids) might be a different story, but what are the odds that Tyranids would be interested in cybernetics anyway?

Assuming you're the GM here, you have no one but yourself to blame for saying "yes" to Dark Eldar in the first place. Let him have his cyber-toys to go with his Spaceman Drizzt fantasy. In for a penny, in for a pound.

I'd say yes, if it is something they actually want. Even humans in 40K might, but I certainly imagine most aliens we get presented having a level of technology to simply grow replacement limbs, and graft them on, or regenerate damaged parts; Eldar live a **** long time, and I don't think they would as well if they might need to live 4,000 years missing a leg. Some might want enhancements, like better eyes, and weapon limbs, and many xenos have demonstrated variants of these.

For me, I like to think that, for loses, the Eldar could possibly grow new ones, or, barring that, fabricate exquisite wraithbone replacements, and the psychic lattice of bearer and prosthetic would make it no less efficient than the original. Dark Eldar keep Haemonculi on hand for this, and they grow many weird things in jars and machines. Tau can, I'm rather sure. I have a DW NPC who got injured in battle, saving an Ethereal. He lost his arm, and an eye, to an explosion, and was fitted with prosthetics till new parts could be grown; he elected to keep the cybernetics, as a reminder of what a single moment of distraction might cost. It is part of why he is "Commander Coldsteel" (Shas'O T'au Aloh Tak Kir'Aun Montyr; sorry, I like throwing up those names). Nids just regenerate, I assume, or die, and are replaced.

So, whether for function-retrieval, or just to make a point on the battlefield, I think most races can. They may just look a little "that race" stylized. Can they use Human-made stuff? Probably, but I imagine most wouldn't want to, based on the level of our tech, and the willingness to dole it out to "filthy xenos". Up to your GM, and possibly the Genetor in question.

Dark Eldar work just fine in the right group/game (a group that's more into violence than negotiations usually). If the player RPes the Dark Eldar like a d***, then that's on the player, not on being a Dark Eldar.

That being said, I'd say 'no but...' to human enhancements. I doubt the (Dark) Eldar nervous system and body functions are similar enough to the human ones to just accept cybernetics meant for humans, so jury-rigging them to work with a Dark Eldar should require some pretty difficult Tech-Use/Medicae tests.

TBH, I think it would be easier for a Dark Eldar to just seek out a Haemonculus and get from him the Dark Eldar version of the cybernetics he wants.

That's basically what I meant by "modifying the technobabble." If you want to ask for a roll, you can, but if I know my twinks, he'll just keep trying until the roll succeeds anyway.

I would probably require a 'black market' surgeon with Forbidden Lore: Xenos to be able to attach a human-made cybernetic to a xeno. It's unlikely a standard medico would know what constitutes 'normal vital signs' for an Eldar...

Also, you might want to impress upon your player the contempt Eldar have for human technology. A Dark Eldar with a human-made cybernetic arm would be akin to a Klansman having a black guy's arm grafted on...

I would have the surgeon do a Forbidden Lore check if he's in the party, otherwise I would have a -20 to -30 modifier to finding a cybersurgeon who can operate on the xenos, the modifier depending on the type of xenos.
