DA's Armada Shipyards

By DiabloAzul, in Star Wars: Armada

This weekend my son and I are doing a 1000 point battle. We plan on running a total of 7 of DA's ships in both fleets. All ships will be limited to a single upgrade each, save for each of our flag ships. We will build our lists tomorrow, and play Saturday. My son is still unsure what title card he will choose for the Intradictor. Any suggestions?

Cool! Please try either Aggregator or Grappler.

I will tell him you suggested them.

The amount of squadrons alone should make Aggregator a good option.

Here are the revised Vindicator cards based on the discussion with Wes, along with a pair of titles:

I have to say I particularly like Houjix, he's a brave little fellow :)

Yet another "must have". Oh so many ships to order after Christmas. At least I can proxy it with my Intradictor until then.

Speaking of, do we know how much the card packs are going to run yet?

That is such a nice little ship. Will probably be in my first purchase from Mel... oh this is getting spendy :D

Looking at those cards I keep wanting to drop a die on the sides but looking at other smaller ships gives me pause. Yeah not a lot of design space there.

If I ever take a list with two ISDs, Motti, and Houjix with redundant shields trailing just behind I'm afraid my opponent would throw his dice at me. :o

The thought does please my evil little heart.

Based on the firepower of the Gladiator and MC30 the Vindicator falls in their vein with less dice but better range capability. I think as long as the points are appropriate the actual base size of the ship is of minimal concern IMO.

I do so like the titles however, and I now know I have to have one of these in my playbook.

For reference, the deck of 50 ship cards I ordered as a test print was $11 plus shipping. The first Shipyards set will probably contain around 20-30 ship cards (~$6), 10-20 squadron & objective cards (~$5), and 20-30 upgrade cards (~$5) plus bases and dials.

I like the Vindicator. Well balanced long range gun platform. However I don't think I would have given it 1 more hullpoint than the Gladiator, as while 100 meters longer it is much less bulky. An extra shield would be more thematic I think.

Apologies for my impatience, but will there be a card for Mel's new Ton-Falk?

Thanks!

Yes, there definitely will be, but I have about a million things to do before that can happen :)

Go ahead and order one from Shapeways, a first version of the card is likely to be out there by the time you receive it!

While trying to lock down the first set for printing, it's become apparent that the Rebel side might need at least 1 new commander and 1 new officer. It's still undecided who these will be (Talon Karrde and Mara Jade would fit with the Heir to the Empire theme - but I feel they belong in an independent Smugglers & Pirates faction, which could get their own future expansion), but at the moment these are the abilities we're looking at:

Organa offers straight up activation advantage for cheap. Maybe too cheap? I'd very much like to see this one get some table time.
The Bothan spy will die to bring you... well, not information, but he will cancel an enemy command dial. Very disruptive if you time it right (and I can see it being a nemesis to Thrawn), but it's a one-use ability.

Hey, everyone! This is my first time posting, but I've been following this thread for a while now (and Mel's before it was taken down), and wanted to say what an awesome job you guys are doing. Having cards and models to be able to make a Clone Wars fleet is so cool. Because of that I bought enough to make a full Armada of Republic and Separatist forces. I'm so excited to finally have them battle!

The only thing left is to get cards for it! :) Which brings me to my question: will your card deck include Separatist cards? If so, I'm guessing it will probably be a while before the deck hits the market because the Separatists are still in development?

Thanks again!

I was thinking on Fey'lya but I have this disdain for him lol. Otherwise they look pretty cool.

Hopefully they'll see some table time soon ;) I'll think about reskinning them to Jade and Karrde, though I'm not yet 100% convinced at this point.

Anyway, today's work went toward a print-friendly template for Upgrade and Title cards (Commander card coming soon) that will look fine in both FFG Mini format and the wider card size used by the printer:

th_Interdictor%20Title%20-%20Black%20Asp th_Interdictor%20Title%20-%20Black%20Asp

th_Gravity%20Well%20Upgrade%20-%20G8-a%2 th_Gravity%20Well%20Upgrade%20-%20G8-a%2

I reckon it will take about an afternoon or so to can convert all the titles in the first set to the new format, as some of the artwork will need updating. But the most difficult and time-consuming work is done.

You'll notice there are no guidelines for trimming; I'll provide those on the reverse side to respect the graphics.

On the subject of card sizing, I printed out several of the cards for test purposes, the only one that is not coming out dead on is the small base. The length is perfect, but the width is off by about a mm and a half too wide. If I trim them to fit the FFG cards the edges of the shield and side battery border will be almost gone.

Am I the only one getting this result, is it just a flaw in my printing?

I am ok with either option. We can save Jade and Karrde for later as they appear beyond the Thrawn Triology.

That's rather important! I have not printed any of those myself, so I have not measured. Can anyone confirm this?

The bases in the set need to be updated anyway, so correcting this shouldn't add too much delay to the release (if any at all - in a pinch I can simply run a horizontal shrinking script). But it will be a long time before I can do this for all the small ships on the website.

I expect to have about half of the title&upgrade cards in the set ready today, and the rest done by Tuesday. By next weekend I should have most if not all of the ship cards and bases updated for printing. Then I'll need about another week to prepare the last couple of bits of artwork and do some inevitable tweaking (this is where your playtest feedback comes in real handy). So the plan is to have the set ready and available for ordering by December 1st.

Ok, quick results from last night's game.

Immobilizer 418, Pelta & Consular Alliance Refit all performed well.

My son went with Aggregator for the Intradictor, and sadly, was never able to use the ability. Either because there were no squadrons in the correct place in range, or there were and most were his. In our opinion it is too situational for 12 points. The Pelta was able to pace the MC30 on the right flank, due to it's maneuverability. And provides desperately needed squadron activations, but still makes you want more of something. (A well balanced ship). The Counselor feels different from the CR90, while still filling the same role in the fleet. Well done.

BTW, the Rebels kicked some Imperial butt. Called it after round 4 half his ships were dead, all the rest were wounded. All I los was an AFMKII

Thanks for the feedback! I've altered the Interdictor somewhat; now it has only two titles (Black Asp and Harpax, corresponding to former Aggregator and Maelstrom respectively) but also two upgrade cards (G7-x and G8-a Projectors, corresponding to former Assessor and Grappler respectively). The abilities themselves are unchanged, but now you can mix and match them, which represents a slight improvement in flexibility. Anyway, yes, the squadron lockdown ability of Aggregator is really hard to use - you really need to pair it with objectives which grant you obstacle control. But it does make your fleet really hard to attack with bombers if you move carefully. It may be overcosted in general terms, but the potential effect is huge so I worry that someone smarter than me will find a clever way to exploit it :)

In other news, I've been very efficient today and have all the ship, squadron and upgrade cards of the set ready for printing. So all that remains to be done is to prep the bases and squadron dials, as well as some other odds and ends. Will keep y'all updated.

I think Bail Organa is fairly balanced. Yeah, he's cheap as commanders go, and he gets use most rounds, but you cede any of the other spectacular (by and large) Rebel commander powers when you take him instead. Borrsk is an ---, and I don't like him either, but he seems useful. Without table testing, which may happen this week or next weekend, I'm hopelessly busy, he seems a tad expensive. Maybe ten instead of twelve, especially as a one-shot? How does his cost per ability compare to other one-shot dial modifiers?

Great work DA, that is good to hear. Guess I better get some ships ordered up in prep. I think Mel got his 1/7000 scale Dreads up today.

Providence just went up as well.
