DA's Armada Shipyards

By DiabloAzul, in Star Wars: Armada

First go at Dreadnaught cards. I have to say I very much agreed with Wes on most of the stats, including the differences between the old Dreads and the Imperial refitted version. My cards aren't quite identical, but they are very close. However, I've also added a third variant, the Katana Fleet version. It's almost identical to the regular Rebel version, but has ion cannons and, more importantly, a command value of 2:

Looking good. Pretty similar in most respects your right. Can't wait to get my models painted so I can give both our versions a go.

The only reason I gave the Rebel Dreadnaught the Ion cannons is cause Bel Ibless had dreads armed that way if I recall.

Yes, but those were Katana fleet dreads :)

And some extras:

What do ya figure, medium base ship?

Based on Utar's picture of his, I would say yes medium. Mel's is 12mm longer.

However the immobilizer 418 looks ok on both a small or a medium, and it is 4mm longer than Mel's dreadnaught, so kind of a tossup depending on what base you choose for the immobilizer.

Also thought I would say here got Mel's Dread, for sure medium base now. We are going to trial them tomorrow on the table for some fun.

Cool! Please take some pics if you get a chance.

I'd love to see some pictures. But I trust your judgement - I'll go ahead and make medium-sized base images.

I did not change my mind on the Immobilizer. I still feel it warrants the small base due to its role in the fleet more then anything. The Dreadnaught simply overhangs the small base by quite a bit. Pic here are on medium base and next to a FFG Victory class. More pics in the Heir to the Empire thread.

Alright, just checking :)

Medium-sized bases are done!

I am curious as to why the dread, which looks like a broadside ship, has most of its firepower located forwards.

I honestly did more research on the subject and rearranged it to 4 dice/side and only 2 forward. The play tests went well today. Also used a single black dice for the anti-squadron armament on the Imperial variation. Seeing as that was its really only Anti-starfighter defense it had when refitted. The rebel version retained a single blue dice for that job as it still had standard laser cannons. Lots to learn but so much fun.

What is the ETA of the updated dreadnaught card?

This was my retake on the ship after some thought and several games at the club. Just a screen capture so forgive some of the blur.

I am curious as to why the dread, which looks like a broadside ship, has most of its firepower located forwards.

20 quad laser cannons (six bow, seven port, seven starboard)

10 laser cannons (five port, five starboard and mounted in blisters)

10 turbolaser batteries (five bow, five stern)

So it makes sense for the turbolaser (red) dice to be evenly spread. But I've gone back and changed the blue dice on the non-refit versions so that the broadside arcs have two, and the front only one.

Thus my Imperial Refit variant is considerably more powerful (and expensive) than Wes', though the others are almost identical.

Wookieepedia lists the armament as:

Did you update the pics on your Heir to the Empire topic?

These are some really great ships guys. I sincerely appreciate the Imperials in particular finally getting some light ships, as well as the awesome Venator ideas. I do have a question: has anyone taken a look at the Munificent class frigate for the Rebels, seeing as it is a model that Mel already has made? Not sure where it would fit into Rebel tactical doctrine, but it would be another distinct variety of ship to add to the list.

I had the idea to do up the Munificent frigate for my Black Sun force I am piecing together.

Diablo, whats your take on the Arqitens cruiser? It was lost in the shuffle.

Never got around to doing that one... maybe it'll be next.

My first approximation will probably look something like this:

Hull 4

Command 1

Squadron 1

Engineering 2

Evade/Evade/Brace

Speed 3 with Neb-like clicks

Anti-squadron: U

Bow: 2 shields, UBB

Port/Starboard: 2 shields, RRUB

Aft: 1 shield, U

Upgrades: Officer, Defensive, Ordnance, Turbolasers, Support

Small base, same arc layout as my Venator (narrow front, broad sides, very broad rear)

That seems awfully light. The Arquitens, if I recall correctly, is about twice the size of the Charger C70 corvettes you see it with in TCW, and those are roughly equivalent in size and ability to Armada's CR90s. I've always thought of the ship as a medium screening element, and something of a corvette killer. Similar to the Gladiator, but less emphasis on close quarters combat. Maybe something like this?

Hull 5

Command 2

Squadron 1

Engineering 2/maybe 3

Either Diablo's list or Evade/Redirect/Brace

Speed 3 with Neb clicks is perfect

AS: 1 Blue

Fore: 2 Shields, 2 Red, 1 Black

Side: 2 Shields, 1 Red, 2 Blue, 1 Black

Aft: 1 Shield, 2 Blue

Upgrades: Diablo's list

Same base as the Venator ought to work just fine as well.

Weaponry aside, that was also my first instinct for stats: Hull 5, Command 2, Engineering 3, Evade/Redirect/Brace. But the only info I could find pointed at ~200m length, which is much closer to a Corvette than to a Neb-B, let alone a GSD. So I went for an upgraded corvette rather than a downgraded frigate. Totally open to suggestions or additional info sources, though.

As for the battery armament, the turbolasers on the Arquitens can't aim dead ahead, so I'd go for a narrow front arc with no reds but very wide broadsides with a bit more oomph. Missiles, on the other hand, aren't as limited by the mount angle, so I figure a reasonable compromise (which makes up for the lack of reds) is to let them be fired together from the bow hull zone, or piecemeal from the broadsides. It makes for an interesting design that has long-range firepower in the flanks, but only (considerable) short-range power in the front arc - which makes good maneuvering essential.

Unfortunately Wookieepedia is rather recalcitrant on the subject, but shots from Rebels season 2 seem to back up the TCW estimate, as CR90s easily zoom by Arquitens CLs, which appear to be about twice as large as the corvettes. I'm more than willing to buy into your weaponry logic, but this ship just seems too light at Hull 4. I also recall being quoted at 450 meters length at one point, but haven't been able to run that source back down. It is certainly one of the lesser known ships of the new canon.

DiabloAzul just wondering how the cards are coming along?

Thanks

Michael
