How would you guys handle telepathy? Like Luke calling to Leia in Empire Strikes Back. From Edge of the Empire I have thought Influence could be used but I see others saying the Battle Meditation upgrade. I personally don't think such a basic use of telepathy should require Force Rating 2 (due to Battle Meditation) but having Influence cover it is a stretch.
Telepathy
Also, for the Sense power does the Range upgrades only work for sensing lifeforms? or sensing emotions and thoughts too?
You can do it a number of ways. Both Battle Meditation and Influence can work fine for what Luke did, it doesn't really have to be one or the other. Battle Meditation makes more sense in the sense that he can get some decent range to make sure Leia gets the message, Influence makes more sense in the sense that it's an existing power that's Luke's seen and obviously trains into it by the time RotJ rolls around. You could even just let a player flip a Destiny Point if you're generous.
Sense's Range only works for sensing life forms (pg. 215 in Beta, Range Upgrade long description).
Mechanically, Force-based telepathy is still something of an "at the GM's whim" sort of thing. If they do include new Force powers in the eventual career sourcebooks, perhaps we'll see something of that nature in either the Consular or Mystics career book.
In the interim, there's the suggestions that Lathrop made, as well as the Message power I devised as part of my (very outdated) Ways of the Force fan supplement. It's not perfect, but it's built around the idea of being able to send quick telepathic messages, much as Luke did in ESB.
Truthfully, I'd say let a PC with the Sense power spend a Destiny Point to send a very brief message and leave it as more of a narrative thing.
As for the Sense Range Upgrades, per the long description in the book they only work for sensing lifeforms, but I'd be fine with them also working to extend the range you can pick up on other people's emotions/thoughts. After all, we see the Emperor picking up on Luke's emotional state a few times during RotJ, and not always within the couple of meters that I'd consider being engaged to require. And there's probably other instances of the same in other parts of Star Wars media.
