A complete Rebel fleet...or.not?

By Hexdot, in X-Wing

Yeah that looks about right. I have the exact same collection minus 1 Xwing which I've been thinking of rectifying but might wait for the next repaint to come out. At this point I just wait for new waves and contemplate buying extras just to do repaints and conversions. Only reason I want multiples of large ships is for that reason and until I have time to do that I haven't felt the need to spend the money. I feel awkward deploying some guys as the wrong paint jobs y'know?

The reason i use to justify three sets of 'most wanted'. So i can have four black sun soldiers for one list and N'dru and the dude in the orange/grey ship as 'special characters'

Aprox. 450 euro / dolars. Expending a reasonable ammount of money each mount, you can say "complete" in more or less six months.

The idea is to own enought ships to don't be limited when playing varied scenarios.

Recon, bombers, alpha strikes...

sir just look at the signatures from some guys like me for example. iam buying as many ships from a type i can fir into a 100 points game and from those super highyl costed ones 1 or 2 ( tie defender in this case )

oh yeah u need some K-wings soon ^^

A little bit...expensive

u know whats expensive ? playing 40k, dust tactics aaaaand x wing alltogether ;p... ( my curse )

well i stopped collecting dust tactics was something like 200€ maybe in total

40k was hmmm 1500 or even 1800€ iam not calculating the paints or the brushes ;P

and x wing hmmm maybe near 700€ ?

wow it went out of control xD

but see it as something like this: no hobby is cheap, my dead goes fishing and his fishing equipment dayum i tell ya money wasted well ;P

3 large ships, each, plus 2.huge, each, is little bit of madness. Mo.ofence intended.

1800 bucks expended in w40k? Take a look to the armies of veteran players who buy GW since the Rogue Trader blue paged core... That is to put money gangsta style.

40.000 + Fantasy + Space Marine + Epic + bloodbowl + man o war + Space Hulk and related + necromunda + plusplus

The only way wargaming is cheap is when you work for a wargames company and its either free of 40 per cent of shop prices.

I worked for GW for five years and hardly paid for anything (managers free samples of new stuff) and then about a year and a bit at wargames foundry (you could take as much home as you like as long as you intended to use it and not sell it)

So i ended up with an huge imperial guard army, a huge tau army, a space marine army, a dark elf army, an eldar army and a tzeench chaos army (plus a skeleton army i never even bothered sticking together) for pennies from GW (my dark elf army was free for helping on the dark elf army books).

Likewise i got a Norman, Roman, Pict, Saxon/Viking and Plains Indian army for free from foundry. Also got knows how much scenery , beasts, civilians etc

(oh and i got a bolt action/warlord games British Infantry force free off warlord and a load of free stuff from battlefront when i worked briefly with wargames illustrated magazine.

The great thing about working as a writer in Nottingham UK is about 90 per cent of the worlds wargames companies are either based here or heavily freelance from here as all the ex GW studio staff live here! (FFG use a lot of ex GW freelancers)

So its dead easy to pick up work for wargames companies and they tend to give you free soldiers too.

Now if i could only wangle some work with FFG on Xwing :)

The key to cheap wargaming is to get inside the 'system'. Otherwise i'd have about one percent of the wargames and miniatures collection I have!

I sold all those armies i got while at GW (for a sizable sum) as i've no interest in plastic 40k figures or warhammer and rebought loads of old 80s metal.

I've got pretty much everything ever released for 40k between 87 and 90 now and most of it painted (as long as its not plastic...other than xwing repaints i cant be doing with plastic much)

I just got my MM order in with three more Most Wanted sets, for a total of six. These are such nice kits. Now I can run twelves Z-s in Epic. I feel that SCUM really needed the full number of this ship.

Half a dozen Y's is awesomeness too!

;)

I find six z95s a good size, lets you have a few upgrades and heroes.

I've also needed to buy more than i wanted to as i hate flying 'characters' with the wrong paint job so i know i'll be buying another set just to have two bynare pirates to escort Kath

If Scum is.your favourite faction, I think 6 Most Wanted packs are reasonable. You have a limited number if ships to.choose so i think it is ok. 12 rebel Zs is too much, because there are a lot of awesome models to choose

I will prolly get three more later, just to do the heroes up and a hand full of the Bynaries too. Right now I am going with six Black Sun and six HUTT Cartell, even got the perfect paints for the HUTT Z's.

I agree. Also you want to go with a few of these sub-factions, it is just to fun not to represent them.

I made this painting last week to get things mapped out... I love, LOVE EPIC!

:D

I dont feel quite so bad reading this thread :P

Agreed :D

Ran 4 BTL-A4s with, ICTs and seismics the other day.

Have some Ion! There you go. Now, have some bomb!

Shenanigans :D

I will save the other 2 for 150 point games.

I felt silly getting 8 Zs until I flew them all in 100 points. Awesome fun! Also I will never need any more copies of Wingman.....ever.

14 X wings does feel over the top. Until you put them all on the board in a 300 point game....Then it just looks amazing :P.

I tend to get rebel ships in threes and imp ships in fours to match the formation seen in the movies,so far bought scum in pairs.

I have no clear idea about the "numbers".of ships needed to say... " my fleet is complete". A compromise between diversity to play scenarios, and a reasonable number of ships.

Perhaps...

6 X wings ( the most iconic ship, multirole )

4 each A, B, Y.

2 or 4 E, not sure about this

1 HWK-290, perhaps 2...

4 Z 95

One yt 1300, plus one yt 2400

No idea about Huge Ships.

I think this is a good point to say...fleet complete, stop wasting money.

Your opinion?

Get what you'll use.

When you enter a gaming store, do they have any X Wing miniatures game Rebel ships for sale?

If the answer is yes, then your fleet is incomplete. :)

Ugh Gadge, way to make me feel bad about placing ANOTHER order with Chaos Cards. I was tricking myself into thinking I got good prices.

I've never paid less than £10.80; where you shopping at Gadge?

Chaos cards is usually £9.95 free shipping over £35 I've had no issues with them.

Cost expenditure varies on where you live.

Cheapest you'll get a new small ship in the uk is about £9.50 and that usually discounted for some reason.

In the US they are what $9. So if you're in the states you'll get twice the collection for your budget than you would in say the UK.

Edit: Which of course means you don't get double the collection for your money. Gonna go check the current exchange rate - it's what, like $1.75 for £1?

Edit edit: $1 ~ £0.65; £1 ~ $1.54. So yes, your point stands; the dollar has slightly more buying power than the pound (when did that happen?!), which means you can have about 1.5 more ships per dollar than you can per pound.

Edit edit edit: No, that was silly math. The pound has more buying power; you spend fewer pounds to buy the same as you would with dollars, right? It's too early for this, and my sinuses are making it impossible to think. Help!

Yeah we get massively screwed for ship cost in the UK

I think australia get it much worse though.

We pay $20 to $22AU for Wave 1 through 5 small base ships (Wave 6 runs from $24 up to $32 for the Viper) & $48 for large base ships/Aces packs. Epic ships range from $84 for the transport $126 for the Corvette & $160 for the Raider pre-order.

Not a cheap hobby here at all.

If you are ordering to the UK try Beer and Pizza games, they have better prices than most places, are really helpful and usually have more in stock.

Need to buy 5 x wings so you can run the 5 Y wings you have with an R5 astromech and laugh when your opponent rolls crits (most of the time anyway)
