You could do something similar to X-wing and add shield tokens to the deployment card, but you could spend them to add a dodge result to the defense roll. That way it would take X number of attacks before any damage or conditions could be applied.
Damage is applied to shields each before HP.
So long as you have at least one shield vehicles can take an action to roll a black dice and gain the number of triangles in shields (Limit once per turn)

So I am thinking the a combination of you suggestions.
Token is spent after the attackers dice.modification phase to gain the equivalent of a dodge. Does not work against any weapons with the ION keyword.

Cool. What are the stats for the tank, and how many spaces does it occupy?
I am working on stats for the M7 fast attack vehicle from Ebbles Miniatures, Xwing Tie fighter and at-at.

X-Wing: 10 spaces, 20 speed, RRYY Attack Pool, +10 accuracy, 30 health. A starfighter is way too big for this scale, but I really do like the idea of more tanks. I had to dig a bit, but the M7 looks really cool, and fits into Star Wars aesthetic. I'm curious to see what comes from that.
I agree that most vehicles are a little big at this scale. I am actually working to combined Imperial Assault with Dust Warfare for an Army scale game.
