Homemade Obstacles (Asteroids and Debris Fields)

By Rengald, in X-Wing

A couple of days I saw a post by another forum user by the name of lubbe. He put together a nice little guide on making simple debris obstacles.

I really liked the idea and I've been working towards playing a larger epic scale game. In an effort to spice up the game a little bit I figured it'd be cool to make some nice obstacles. So with lubbe's efforts in mind, I figured I'd give it a try.

For me, price was something to consider... I didn't want to throw a ton of money at this otherwise I would just buy some of those really nice premade tokens that are on sale all over the internet. The only cost out of pocket for me was a 7 lb bag of lava rocks... which cost 4 dollars... so not too huge of an investment. That aside I used the following:

1. Lava rocks

2. Balsa Wood

3. Wire from the spiral binding of a notebook

4. And Greenstuff for the debris field.

5. A little bit of cardboard.

I used the greenstuff to do a really rough cast of an X-Wing, and A-wing and a Tie Fighter. Then I hacked the casted part into a rough shape and added some cardboard pieces to make an okay debris field. The asteroids were easy enough... just mounted lava rocks on a piece of wire and attached the wire to a balsa wood base.

The hardest part was carving the balsa wood into accurate shapes of the tokens they are based off of. Anywho... Here's some pictures of the WIP obstacles!

I'm hoping that painting up the debris field will allow me to add some detail to the rough casts. Should look decent in the end... I hope...
