this might have been asked before but i couldn't find the question. when measuring range do we measure from the plastic base on attacking ship hull to plastic base on the defending ship hull ? or from the actual plastic model? and if can we place the measure stick on any part of the attacking hull zone if plastic base as a starting point? my friend ref page 7 Measuring Firing Arc and Range and stated we do not include the square ship base and i disagreed. i didn't think we measured from the actual physical ship model? to me that would open up all kinds of issues.
use the ship model or the base for determining range?
I believe it's actually cardboard to cardboard. It is not model to model. The models are purely asthetic.
Yep, its cardboard to cardboard when measuring range, arcs, etc. (rules ref p7).
Note that for overlapping you include the plastic portions of the base too though.
i finally made time to manually surf through all the older posts and i found a post that linked to this nice pdf
Just to be more specific...
The RRG (Page 7) says that you measure from base to base (plastic included) only ignoring activation sliders, shield dials and the small plastic bits that frame the shield dial.
The rest of the base is fair game for measuring range to and from.
Edited by DWRRBase to base, not including the shield dials.
Just to be clear, it's base to base of the hull zones you are firing from to the hull zones you are firing to. Closest points on each.

I can't seem to find the "base to base" reference. Could you point me in the right direction?
What I do find is this (p 7):
To measure attack range from a ship, measure from the closest point of the attacking hull zone. To measure attack range to a ship, measure to the closest point of the defending hull zone.
And this (p 6):
A hull zone is a section of a ship token delineated by the two firing arc lines that border it. It does not include any part of the plastic base.
Going by thouse two statements the plastic base seems to be excluded from attack range measurements.
Then we have this (P 7):
When measuring firing arc, range, or distance, ignore squadrons’ activation sliders and ships’ shield dials and the plastic portions of the base that frame the shield dial.
This could be enterpreted as a hint to include other parts of the plastic base then thouse outlined to be excluded, but it doesn't actualy say so...
Looks to me that in the specific case of attack range, RAW tell us to measure from cardboard to cardboard, ignoring ALL plastics.
Quite the contradictions...
Oh interesting catch! Not sure now. Mind you, if you exclude the plastic around the shield dials or anything else protruding from the base, the difference between the edge of the base and the edge of the cardboard is a couple of millimetres at best.
I think the rules make it a point to specifically refer to either the base or the "token", which is what they call the cardboard overlay you put on the plastic base.
Some Rules Reference examples:
- A ship gets destroyed if any portion of the base is outside the play area.
- A hull zone is a section of the token , and does not include any part of the plastic base
- To measure ship attack range, measure from the closest point of the hull zone (aka, the token )
- Measuring to or from a squadron, you use the closest point of the base
- The "within" word definition with regard to range/distance refers to the "base or token". (That's kind of nutty, isn't it? One or the other? Doesn't "base and token" make more sense?)

That link doesn't work has a stray space at the end.
