Zertik Strom

By KommanderKeldoth, in X-Wing

Actually, I'm more excited about this guy than Juno. Sure Juno can move all crazy, but she's just another high PS ace who can do amazing things. I like Strom for what he can do to a list.

Strom w/ title and Sensor Jammer

Carnor Jax w/ PTL

Mauler Mithel

Dark Curse

Academy

These guys can go toe to toe with a BBBZ list, but do better. The idea is to get in the face of the enemy formation and throw red dice at them, while getting a lot of green dice in defense. Oh, and no Focus for the enemy.

Firesprays, Shuttles and Decimators aren't that fond of being in arc, and at range 1 of multiple enemy ships.

Enter Zertik.

I had this thought, too. He will be a great defense against swarms, but I think he'll also be a great insurance policy for your heavy ships. Problem is, you'll need another ship to mediate your damage deficit and heavy shios are expensive while the advanced is still pricey compared to its offensive output.

I'm liking the idea of running him with Colonel Vessery. Zertik acquires a target lock, shoots something else (possibly with Accuracy Corrector) while Vessery hits the first target, then end of turn Zertik can spend his lock to flip one of the damage cards Vessery handed out face-up.

You're thinking about Colzet. But, otherwise, good thinking!

It's not a bad ability. 2 attack dice ships like being in range 1.

The ability isn't too many points (his PS isn't that high) and it doesn't require any other help to make it uesful.

I wouldn't build a list around this guy.

I proxied Strom and Eclipse with Jax a few times on Monday. Mixed results - mostly due to fickle green dice. 7 blanks on defense in game 1. Thanks lady luck.

Eclipse is a dream boat and while I like Strom, I have to think about more builds for him. His ability is good but sort of benign. A b-wing r1 of you with 3 modified TL or focus dice still packs a punch. Pairing him with Jax was pretty hilarious though. No r1 bonus and you cannot use focus/evade - everyone ended up using TL though and still got their shots in and my greens failed.

My next plan is Eclipse, another TIE Advanced, and Col. Jendon. Afterwards, I'll try BH or Deci and two TIE Advanced. Jax felt so flimsy I'm going the opposite direction.

My first try with Mr. Stromberg:

Zertik Strom (28)
TIE Advanced (26), TIE/x1 (0), Intimidation (2), Accuracy Corrector (3)

“Howlrunner” (19)
TIE Fighter (18), Determination (1)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13) x 4

that's why I'm thinking if you are going with a list designed with Strom in mind, go ahead and give him Sensor Jammer. That is, as long as you have enough other ships in your list to do the damage.

TIE Advanced (26), TIE/x1 (0), Intimidation (2), Accuracy Corrector (3)

What about subbing in Draw Their Fire for Intimidation? He protects the whole group against close range shots and acts as Howlrunner's bodyguard.

Talonbane Cobra is going to HATE this guy.

Mauler Mithel should love him, though.

Could be good. Or not. Imagin blocking a Robocrab with intimidation, while the swarm gets a good shot ...

Mauler Mithel should love him, though.

Yup! Just threw together my next list - Eclipse, Strom, Mithel, and Howlrunner. Girl power, prockets, and vrroom.

Zertik Strom (26)
Predator (3)
Sensor Jammer (0)
TIE/x1 (0)

Carnor Jax (26)
Push the Limit (3)

That's the PS3. We're talking about the PS6.

I'm probably going to try something like this:

Darth Vader (29)

Predator (3)

Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

TIE/x1 (0)

"Mauler Mithel" (17)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Zertik Strom (26)

Predator (3)

Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

TIE/x1 (0)

"Backstabber" (16)

Total: 97

Vader and Strom will each have a TIE Fighter wingman with matching PS that have the potential of throwing 4 dice at range one.

Does Eclipse benefit from Engine Upgrade or is she plenty capable just on natural ability?

That's interesting that just taking target locks was the answer with Jax in the field. I would bet that with ships that rely heavily on Predator, it's going to be pretty frustrating to have to just take target locks instead of evades and focuses. My Chewbo list relies heavily on taking focus for both offence and defense, or the evade on the falcon.

I am too. Whoops.

I haven't seen a thread devoted to this particular TIE advanced pilot yet.

PS 6, Elite and Missile upgrades. Enemy ships at range 1 cannot add their range combat bonus.

What do folks make of his ability? Will it be useful? Note that his ability denies the enemy ships use of their extra range 1 attack die period, not just against Zertik.

The article makes a good point of using him with Carnor Jax to compliment his ability. Throw Push the limit on Jax and Veteran instincts and Engine Upgrade on Zertik.

I prefer Allegra...

First thing I'm trying:

Captain Kagi (27)

+ Sensor Jammer (4)

+ Rebel Captive (3)

Carnor Jax (26)

+ Royal Guard TIE (0)

+ Shield Upgrade (4)

+ Push the Limit (3)

+ Autothrusters (2)

Zertik Strom (26)
+ TIE/x1 (0)

+ Proton Rockets (3)

+ Advanced Targeting Computer (1*)

+ Veteran Instincts (1)

I call it ACCESS DENIED.

I've been running a TIE swarm - as suggested, I'd like to try throwing him in the front rank. Zertik Strom flying headbutt attack.....

Zertik Strom
* TIE/x1
* Enhanced Scopes
* Intimidation

Obsidian Squadron Pilot

Obsidian Squadron Pilot

Obsidian Squadron Pilot

Black Squadron Pilot
* Draw Their Fire

Howlrunner

I like Intimidation, but I'd recommend Sensor Jammer.

I was running her with PtL and I think I'm going to back off chasing the green and put VI on her instead. That way she has maximum situational awareness to decide on the speed of her maneuver, and she won't be 1/2 banking until she passes out.

Engine Upgrade does work well with her, especially 1 hard and boost/barrel, but if you're getting 1 action do you really want it to be a boost? Sometimes.

I'm noticing the Advanced generally lacks action economy - you're not using your TL, you're often using barrel or boost (if you have EU equipped) to get into range and arc, and sometimes you'll take an evade if you're on the run. I haven't been taking focus that often, save for when I'm unleashing prockets.

I ran Eclipse, Strom, Mithel, Howlrunner last night and it was fun but it just reaffirmed that VI rather than PtL is a good choice.

I've yet to try my 2 Advanced + Jendon build.
