IG-88B and the Gunner Effect, or, Multiple Secondary Attacks

By Eruletho, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Is there anywhere that states that a player must first attack (and miss) with the primary weapon to trigger a second, secondary weapon attack from IG-88B's pilot ability? The way I read the card, it doesn't matter which weapon he attacks with first, he can make an attack with an equipped cannon upgrade if he misses, even if he already shot with that same cannon. "Once per round, after you perform an attack that does not hit, you may perform an attack with an equipped (cannon) secondary weapon."

Multiple times over the past couple of weeks, it has been indicated to me that you have to attack with your primary first to trigger the effect, and I don't believe that to be the case.

You are correct - the card says "after you perform an attack"

You may perform an attack with both primary weapons, OR any equipped upgrade card with the attack header (aka secondary weapons)

The burden of proof is on your opponent to demonstrate where the restriction exists

Once again the golden rule applies.

Nothing on the card says you must use your primary, so you don't need to use it. The card would have to say something like "once per round after an attack with the Primary weapon..."

Anytime Primary or Secondary attack is not mentioned, then it doesn't matter what weapon you use.

The burden of proof is on your opponent to demonstrate where the restriction exists

And since there is no such restriction, that'll be very hard to do! :P

You could take a range 1 primary weapon shot on a cloaked Phantom or turtled-up Soontir, hoping to punch some damage through or at least clear some tokens.

And, if you miss, and didn't remove enough tokens for a Mangler Cannon shot to be worth it (ie: too likely you won't land a hit), you can take your Mangler shot on a different target instead to put some damage on something.

Exactly my point :)

The default answer to any opponent who claims a restriction to an effect that isn't stated clearly on the card is:

"where does it say that?"

unless they can reference a specific instance in the FAQ or core rules that overrules what the card says, then you go with the card.

Just like what Vanor said:

Do what the card says - not what it doesn't say

edit - as a slight aside, if your opponent is claiming that an attack with your secondary cannon weapon is not classed as an attack - then you get two attacks - one primary - one cannon .......you know - because one of them isn't an attack

furthermore if the cannon attack is not classed as an attack it doesn't have to happen during the attack phase either because there is nothing in the rules to say when it actually happens - therefore you can choose

You can even do it if you land on an asteroid because you are restricted only to not performing attacks - and a cannon attack is not an attack.... according to him.

see what he has to say about them apples
