New to Armada

By Takeda, in Star Wars: Armada

So after thinking about it for a while I decided to finally get a starter box. I have been playing X wing since the beginning and I can already tell I like this game way more. Anyone else had the same feeling?

I've been playing X-Wing for about a year now, and I'm undecided which I'm going to like more. At the moment, I think Armada has more promise but not due to any factors integral to the game itself, but more due to the community surrounding it.

...and that has nothing to do with the specific individuals involved (I love my X-Wing homies), but more because Armada is still small and that community is still being formed.

Because we're at the very beginning of the game, the community is still shaping up and it's possible to give that community some shape and direction. I've done that by creating a Facebook group and a blog, and encouraging self-organization within that community. As a result, we've had one tournament already and have another coming up this weekend. We're also looking to get a league going once wave 1 hits, and maybe a many-player narrative tree campaign after that league concludes.

As a result, I think I'm going to enjoy Armada more, because we'll have the opportunity to have more intriguing styles of play around the game itself.

However, my dream is to figure out a way to build a style-of-play that involves multiple games.

The learning game has been a blast but everything else doesn't interest me. The thought of dealing with the objectives and only having 6 real rounds of game play doesn't intrigue me. Also I don't know if it was the dice or what exactly but it seemed really difficult to do any real damage to your opponent except on a crazy good roll one round.

Knowing how the Meta works in X-Wing I have no interest in gaming the system of Armada. Initiative seems hugely favorable. Having to plan your armada balanced over the objectives but still trying to win the initiative bid just seems not fun to me. But I'm not everyone and I'll likely eventually check out more of the full game experience but it isn't calling to me at all.

Which isn't to say Armada isn't a great game, it is. And it may also be a game you like better than X-wing for a host of reasons, but the above could be a factor as well. :)

I enjoy it more because it is more complex. There is a far greater deal of strategy involved than in X wing.

Also, nobody says you can't play total kill games. 6 turns is a suggestion! I fully plan to have 15-20 star destroyers:).

One thing I love about X-Wing is outflying my opponent. In the 4 games of Armada I played I never felt I could really 'outfly' them. Although getting my Corvette behind the gladiator and piling damage into its rear was fun.

I tried to resist the urge to buy into Armada.

I have X-wing.

I own every ship in x-wing and will continue to do so. I love the game.

But Armada offers a differetn experience. It's more about the stratefy than spacial awareness.

Of course due to assumptions about the rules I made thanks to X-Wing I've never played Armada Right. But even so, I've had a blast.

(And I totally like my better. Having a Star Destroyer move 4 on turn one is freaking great.)

I do wish that it had everyone shoot then everyone move. But I can see why they don't.

Either way. I'm excited for wave 1 and eventually hitting 300 points.

To me Armada is more about positioning not just outflying.

after playing this game for the first time, you can tell immediately that FFG learned from X-wing by dodging its two easily greatest mistakes

1.) Defense Tokens are awesome (no green dice)

2.) Every arc on every ship is very distinct and places special emphasis on positioning (no turrets)

in terms of that, I have far higher hopes for Armada going forward than I do for X-wing :)

Took the words right out of my mouth

Have you tried playing objectives in a 300 point game? If not I really do urge you to give it a go (using Wave 1 or print outs of spoiled cards). The game becomes so much more at that level. 6 rounds is a decent length, most of the ones I've played last 2-2.5 hours which is good - any more than that would be too long I think (for me at least).

I totally agree, especially when playing the aforementioned 300 point objective games. That said, it is not overly complex or too 'rulesey' - I think they've struck a pretty good balance.

I don't know that I'll like one more than the other.... I like them both for their own qualities and what I'm in the mood for at any particular time.

Glad you're enjoying armada! It is a fun game :)

I have not as I only own the core box and just the thought of trying to build a 300 point armada to cover the 9 objectives as best I can doesn't sound fun.

2 different games there's no need to pick one over the other.

there is if your wallet does not run deep :P

List building is one of the many things I enjoy about games like this. That said, you can't really build a fleet to cover all 9 objectives. e.g. some favour a few big ships (better for Imps ATM), others favour lots of smaller ships (rebels). To start with, pick 3 objectives that you like (one of each type) and just build your fleet around that, allowing for the initiative bid ofc.

Assuming you're playing against someone with a core set, swap your rebel ships with his Imp ones (or vice versa) for the match. Voila, you have a 300 pt game. IMO you haven't really played Armada until you have played a full game, so please do try it and don't be put of by all the objectives.

I was born for somthing bigger than a simple pilot. I want to be an admiral.....So in armada i was promoted.

So who dont want to be that. I rest my case....give into Your dark side and follow Your dreams.
