My grandpa's x-wing experience

By Hexdot, in X-Wing

He is 78, health better than mine and he ages ago he was worked as Air Traffic controler. And after he stopped working he started his wargaming career, painting napoleonic armies. Twice we have played x wing, easy play, no upgrades, etc.

- Superb minis, prepainted and mounted. Today's youngsters don't like to work...

- Game mechanics OK, works smoothly

- The lack of 3D kills x wing.as a wargame. It is a good game, but not a wargame.

Only two games, but I respect his impressions. And perhaps we are lazy, but I think that this is a wargame.

5 minutes to tell basic mechanic, and started playing. Perhaps one of the fastest air combat games to start.

These are the games you will remember most as you get older. Being able to play games with your grandfather is a wonderful thing, and such good family time no matter the game you play.

Am I the only one who would be really curious / excited to play against said grandfather? You're lucky :)

Yes I am. He loves Grand Armee 1812-1813, and was a tought, very tought opponent playing "Over the Reich" and " The Speed of Heat " air warfare hex wargames. Damm bf 109K late production, 30 mm cannon armed.. Not a white haired good tempered grandpa... Those memories are pure gold

...lol....this is VERY MUCH NOT a wargame...

awesome und wunderbar to enjoy Opa!!

I wish my grandparents were still alive. Enjoy them while you can.

That is awesome!

My late GF was a master with all things wood. Whilst he might have enjoyed the odd game or two .. I think he would have found more enjoyment in creating elements for the game. I have no doubt, he'd have sat down and presented a 100pt force made entirely of wood, on a blitzing, collapsible gaming table complete with places to place your cards and put your coffee. Why would he do it? Just to see a grand-kid smile.

Old mate was gifted with his hands and the greatest of guys in general. If I could be half the fella he was, I'd be happy.

Amen

I know of no wargame that offers any sort of real 3D rules, the most you get is basic elevation.

The most commonly accepted definition of Wargame that I know of, would very much include X-Wing in it.

Check "Birds of Prey".

Your Grandfather sounds like a true gronard. These are the guys that rules and tables for how the weather changes hourly in their games. They have sub tables for their sub tables! It's true that X-wing was built to be smoother to play and more accessible, but I must admit that I have been leaning towards this type of a game for a while. Also easier to find more people to play it!

Check "Birds of Prey".

Cool, I will. But a single system that I'd say few people have heard of is proof that 3D rules are common.

Admittedly for most games, it's about ground troops or sea battles so 3D doesn't really apply much. But even then most air to air games I've seen at best have simplistic rules regarding 3D.

Flames of War for example actually include things like fighters and recon aircraft. But it does little to factor in 3D movement. I don't think anyone could reasonably claim that FoW isn't a wargame.

But either way I'm glad you had fun with your grandpa. :)

Jejeje, we played ASL in the '90s, love sub tables.

I owned ASL, but never could find anyone to play with.

Try VASSAL. 90% of actual ASL players are on it. And Rising Sun is...ohhhhh man. But I have not touched ASL since 2003 or 2004

Look up SITS. Not just 3D but vectored thrust!

Any other HH fans on here?

The only game I every played with my grandpa was mowing his lawn...

I'll consider that. But I had ASL back in the mid 80's... Like 87 or so, back when AH first published it.

MMP is doing a good job, but veeeery slow. Try VASSAL, it works fine, one of my brothers still plays VASSAL ASL

I wouldn't classify X-Wing as a wargame...miniatures game yes, wargame no. It's fun, but at about the same level as HeroClix

Ouhhhhhhch....that hurts!!!! The same level as heroclix

Sounds like...my grandpa!!!

everyone remember that thread about teaching asian grandmas how to play?

anyone else have some stories about unlikely xwing players?

Air Cav was 3d. Hex based helocopter fights. Most land based games also include 3d elements with the terrain heck even battletech had a shots from above/below table.

I'm glad you and your grandpa play. I am nearly out of grandparents and the time I still get with Grandma (100 this year) is priceless.

WH 40K has very real 3D rules due to how the models interact with the terrain. Putting your ranged infantry up high above the table in a tall building or hill to increase their LOS is a pretty basic strategy in that game. I think Wings of War also has an altitude rule (possibly an optional rule) that affects which ships can shoot at each other.

I don't agree that a game needs 3D rules to be a wargame. I could also see how X-Wing might be too simple for someone that's probably been playing wargames since before it became its own industry. It's great to see family members connecting through games. Great post.

Those 4 foot long sharpened sticks look like a nightmare to play around and store. And why do so many 20th century dogfighting games focus on WWI?? WWII dogfights were so much more exciting.
