Does the ship receiving a Target lock from "Dutch" have to be in "TL" range of an enemy ship?

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing Rules Questions

"After acquiring a target lock, choose another friendly ship at Range 1-2. The ship may immediately acquire a target lock." So suppose Dutch was at range 3 of an enemy and the friendly ship he wished to give the TL to was behind him?

Dutch doesn't alter any of the restrictions on legal targets for acquiering a target lock. So if Dutch's friend doesn't have an enemy ship in rang, then he can not benefit from Dutch's abillity.

yeah many of us were in or are in the Airforce and just figured that "Dutch" was simply feeding the other guy his telemetry So he could lock on.. It wasn't that big of a deal. USAF aircraft do that thing all the time now... Along those same lines if you have to be in TL range to get a TL why do you get to keep the TL if an enemy moves out of TL range??? shouldnt the TL be broken if you move out of range??

Well, sens or no, the rules are what they are, and they do allow you to keep an existing lock if target goes out of range but they do not allow you to acquire a lock if target is out of range.

Just a note, the TL Dutch lets a friend take does not have to be on the same ship that Dutch is locking onto.

It's just like the ship takes a free Target Lock action, but without being an action.
If you want the other way around, think Colonels Jendon and Vessery.

Like Jendon, though, "Dutch" can theoretically pass Target Locks to friendly ships without the Target Lock action.
However, he's a Rebel, and there aren't any of that. Yet.

The way you describe "sharing telemetry" it that is what Dutch did then the ship he gives a TL to should have to TL the same ship which is not the case.

In theory you maybe should lose the TL if a ship moves out of range but the game makes it hard enough to acquire at TL, especially for low PS ships, that it could make the action pointless. I guess we could also ask the question "how many ways are there to use a TL on a ship that is beyond your range to relock on it?"

Dutch doesn't pass telemetry to other pilots... He gently reminds them where their 'Lock Target' button is...

Misspelled Maneuver there... sorry

and colour :P
