Star Trek Attack Wing Changes Perfect Turrets

By NorseJedi, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Thought this would be interesting given the similarities between Attack Wing and X-Wing, but posted it in off-topic since it pertains to Star Trek. Whiz Kids just changed their rules for ships with perfect turrets due to a lack of diversity in tournaments (see the very bottom of the text copied below). It appears that we continue to see domination by decimator and falcon combos in our tournaments as well. Frankly I would welcome this change to create more diversity in X-Wing. I'm sure FFG is watching closely as well to see what it does to the Trek meta. Your thoughts?

"Hello Star Trek: Attack Wing Players,

Thank you for your continued support of Star Trek: Attack Wing. We want to thank everyone for coming out to the US National Championship, the Canadian National Championship and for all the ongoing in-store tournament support. We also want to offer special congratulations to our new National Champions, Danial Dattola and Pete Smith! We look forward to seeing many familiar and new faces at the World Championship being held June 3rd-7th, 2015 at Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio.

From time to time we make changes to try to make the highest levels of competitive play a vibrant and active experience. Our playtesting over the past year identified a few areas to focus on, and we verified at the National Championships what we believe will be good for the competitive play community.

The following changes should bring more variety of factions and ships types to the current environment.

-Ships with a 360-degree firing arc printed on their Ship Token may only fire their Primary weapon up to Range 2 when firing from that arc, unless granted the ability to fire at Range 3 from a specific upgrade card."

thats interesting, but i think it would just see an increase in outriders with HLC or manglers.

i think this would be worth bringing up in the main forum, as it will bring some good discussion. i know i personally this is only the third time ive hit the OT forum, so would alteast gain more traction/views/generate more discussion

The problem with those particular ships in Star Trek Attack Wing (STAW) is more sophisticated than a cursory glance might suggest.

The reason for the nerf was because these particular ships had a combination of the best hull, best shields, best firing arc, best movement dial (we can move backwards and sideways without requiring a special action to do so), and most attack dice (six dice at range 2-3, and 7 dice at range 1 - all of which can be added to by other game effects). While some of these advantages were "costed" in the squad point cost of the card, the 360 degree firing arc, and ability to move both backwards and sideways came "free" - and it ended up being a game-breaking advantage.

Competitive players like lean builds - the kind that give you the most advantage for the least effort. The ships in question were miles ahead of anything else in the game in this department, such that the compeitive scene was dominated by these ships in almost identical configurations.

This was a nerfing that was long over due, and welcomed by pretty much anyone who had played and loved the game prior to this mind-bogglingly unbalanced and prolonglingly unchecked addition.

What I see in X-Wing is balance, balance, balance. It's why I switched over.
