Looking for feedback on idea for a casual Epic event

By Klutz, in X-Wing

With the upcoming release of the Raider, I'm looking into organizing a casual, Epic event.

I have worked out a basic structure for my event and some special list building rules.

I'd like to get your thoughts, comments and ideas for making the event as enjoyable as possible.

Here are the ideas I had in mind while coming up with the event structure:

  • Casual. Casual. Casual.
  • Event takes place between 9am and 5pm.
  • Each player gets to play at least 3 games.
  • Cater to people who enjoy teams play and those who prefer individual play

Here are the things I had in mind when thinking of the squad building rules:

  • Favor the use of Epic ship, without making them a requirement
  • Put limits on massive swarms, to keep games to a reasonable time limit
  • Allow the use of all 3 factions

Proposed squad building rules

Players will sign up in teams of 2.
Each player on a team builds a squad, respecting all the X-Wing Team Epic Squad Building Rules, including:
  • 200 points per person
  • Maximum of 3 epic points per player
  • Maximum of 8 small ships of a single type or 4 large ships of a single type
  • Both players on a team cannot use the same unique upgrade or pilot card
In addition to these rules:
  • Each player must select 6 unique obstacles for use with their squad
  • The 2 most expensive ships on a player's squad must have a combined cost of at least 100 points

Proposed event structure

The first 2 rounds will follow standard Swiss Pairings, with each player playing individually.

For these first 2 rounds:
  • Team mates will not play against each other
  • The matches will be limited to 90 minutes
  • A 3' x 6' area will be used
  • A 24 point difference is required to score a full win
  • A full win is worth 5 points, a modified win 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss 0 points

Following these 2 rounds, teams will be ranked by summing the team mates' scores and MoVs. Teams will then be matched up for a final, truly epic, match featuring 400 points per side.

For this last round:
  • The match will be untimed, and will end when one side is completely destroyed or the store closes
  • A 3' x 6' area will be used
  • A 36 point difference is required to score a full win
  • A full win is worth 10 points, a modified win 6 points, a draw 2 points and a loss 0 points
  • A set of 12 unique obstacles will be used (6 asteroids and 6 debris clouds)
The teams will be matched up as follows:
  • The top ranked team will play the team ranked 2nd
  • The team ranked 3rd will play the team ranked 4th
  • Etc.

In the case of an odd number of teams, the 3 lowest ranked teams will play a three-way battle:

  • A 4' x 6' area will be used.
  • The team that is eliminated first, or that has the least number of points remaining at the end will receive a match loss.
  • The team that is eliminated second, or that has the 2nd highest number of points remaining at the tend will receive a modified win.
  • The team that is the only survivor, or that has the most points remaining will receive a full win.
  • If the top 2 teams are tied for points, they each receive a modified win.
  • A full win is worth 10 points, a modified win 6 points, a draw 2 points and a loss 0 points.
At the end of this final match, the final ranking will be determined using points and MoV. This means the 3rd or 4th place team could potentially jump ahead of the 1st or 2nd place teams!
Proposed prize distribution
The two players of the top team will each get to pick 1 prize from the prize pool. Then, names will be drawn at random with each person getting to pick 1 prize from the remaining prizes until prizes run out. No player will get 2 prizes (including the 2 players from the top team).

In our normal 100pt dogfight tournaments, we have time for 5 games (5h of play) with the final often going past 5pm. With the proposed structure, we should have time for the 2 first games (3h total) and have at least 2h30 left for the final game.

Thoughts? Comments? Criticisms? Ideas?
