I can say that I haven't used him yet, nor has anyone I ever played the game with ever wanted to select him. Is he just really bad or misunderstood?
Does anyone ever use Tomble?
I actually just used him the other day. I think he was awesome. as long as you keep him beside another hero. I used him with Thief so he could pick up search tokens 3 spaces away.
I had a warrior I kept him beside. Although after rereading the card I think I played him wrong. I was only adding one dice. The warrior was rolling a silver and a brown. So Tomble would roll 2 silvers and a brown when standing beside him.
I don't think he is a poor hero but I do think that he is a poor scout.
His Hero Ability requires him to stay adjacent to another hero which is not how you usually want to play the scout.
Unless you're a Thief, which is the class he's traditionally paired with (note the throwing knives in his character art and thief base gear.) He also makes a good shadow walker, which can search tokens near the shadow soul- plus, remember that he doesn't need to stay near a hero, he just is inclined to end his turn there.
Speaking for myself here... but when it comes to the character types that i enjoy **playing** (within a Fantasy setting), Halflings / Gnomes / Dwarfs are not among them.
I don't mind Dwarfs too much, but others, certainly not my cup of tea.
I guess I'm prejudice. (note that none of what i'm saying refers to game mechanics or abilities).

As you said : he's not a poor hero, only a poor scout.
Which mean he's useless as a Treasure Hunter, Stalker, Bounty Hunter and even Thief (dunno why guys keep wanting to play him as a thief, his ability is clearly not suited for it).
But he makes an AWESOME Wildlander ! Put him near any "Tank" (like a Knight, a Marshall or whatever) and he will be unstoppable. He can do a pretty decent Shadow Walker as beiing said before.
His main interest is in team oriented gameplay. Put him near Ravaella with a Rune Plate and Laugh....Hello black-black-grey defense dices in Act 1 (even more if you put him an armor too).
As far as I saw, he can be incredible if well played, and a pain in the ass for the OL. They're many many weaker heroes than him.
I'm the OL and only a few games in, but Tomble as Theif is kicking my butt.

If tomble as Thief is kicking your butt, I don't wanna imagine what a Logan as Treasure Hunter would do to your poor ass
I highly enjoyed playing a whole campaign with tomble as a thief. His basic hero ability easily gets him 2 or 3 defense dice even in the first act, which basically means OLs won't focus him as long as he is adjacent to another hero.
So basically I thought that he worked incredible well staying near the party until a crucial point where you want a scout/thief, then use his heroic feat and in the next turn run extremely fast, do your thing and hope you make it back to your party. The thief abilities are highly usefull for that imo (first you can run through units with the tumble skill and secondly the shadow skill will require the monsters to spend 1 surge to hit you, which often lowers their damage significantly, which prolongs his life in the short parts of the encounters where he isn't with other heros.).
I totally understand that he probably is as good as a wildlander, although I think without the skill to run through enemies, his heroic feat is kind of suicidle.
Additionally Changelings probably yet again can really do something against that, but maybe you can lure them in unfavorable positions that way... I don't know, I played Tomble before getting SoN.

Because he can remove and place his figure with his heroic feat, he can completely go through monsters, pits, lava, portcullises etc, with or without tumble.

Yes this is true and this remains an extremely good heroic feat for any class he chooses imho.
However without "tumble" or any other similar skill, his heroic feat turns into some kind of one way ticket, extremely good to get behind a monsterblockage, but the next turn when a big wall of monsters blocks you from getting back to your partymembers, your heroic feat can't be used again and your hero ability does nothing as well, leaving you completely open for getting knocked out, without being near someone who could revive you.
I just brought up that example, to illustrate that there is a very valid synergy between Tomble and the thief class, because others denied that fact.
Definetely- I agree that Tomble makes a great thief- I tend to over-clarify whrn it comes to movement rules- things can get very misunderstood.
Tomble is a good Bounty Hunter and Wildlander.
I've started using him as a Thief. He's becoming one of my fav heroes.
