My suggestion to all new players (re: Learn to Play Book) . . .

By willismaximus, in Star Wars: Armada

After playing through the learning scenario and getting a grip on the basic rules, once you are comfortable . . .

1.) Take that learn to play booklet, and set it on fire.

2.) Spread the ashes into the four winds.

3.) Embrace your new bible, the Rules Reference.

Seriously, it does a great job for what it's intended . . . get people a basic familiarization with the basic rules. But after that, it seems to cause problems if you cling to it.

I plan to take pictures of myself immolating mine. Or maybe I'll get a little more creative with it . . . haven't been to the gun range in a while

The few people I have shown the game to, I have said something like "the rules are good, the rulebook is terrible!" I am still surprised the Armada rulebooks are as terribly laid out as they are since the X-wing rules are laid out near perfectly.

It's the same way for Imperial Assault, and I'm willing to bet other FFG games.

A recreation of the scene at the end of RotJ? ;)

Edit: the following is in response to DarkHorse's post /edit

I actually think the RR is good. Its worded very specifically, its just that a lot of people don't read it thoroughly or misinterpret what's there. If you actually read through it carefully, it does explain pretty much everything. However, you need to read through it a few times as related rules are under different sections.

The only issue that has been debated that is not in the RR is whether, after flying through squadrons, your opponent can place them off the board. Please note, this is not an invitation to debate the rule (or anything else), I just bring it up as an example.

Just so we're on the same page, I'm referring to the learn to play book. I agree the rules reference is great and should be studied thoroughly. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you though.

Sorry willismaximus, the stuff about the RR was in response to DarkHorse's comment, I just forgot to quote his bit before I went on a mini-rant lol.

Yeah, the Learn to Play guide is fine for your first game to get a feel for it, but after that, should be completely discarded. The Rules Reference Guide is far superior, lists all the steps, and everything is cross indexed. The only thing it doesn't have are pretty pictures.

Learn to Play book?

What's this "Learn to Play" book everyones talking about?

There's a Rules Referance book and a "These are not the Rules You're Lookng For" picture book.

Nonono!!! Do not listen to these heretics that would have you harm the blessed pages of the Book Of Learnicus.

Instead, seal away it's holy pages in a secure vault until it is time to reveal it to a new initiate into the Cult Armadicus!

Then, seal it away again under the triple sealing sign until it's potent magicks are called for again to commence the ascension into (turbo-laser) Light of another new initiate!

This sounds awfully close to the language from a certain other futuristic game.....

Hehe... I was an Outrider for GW back in the good old days, I know how it is.

"Turbo lasers for the Emperors throne!!!"

Oddly, there's at least one rule that's on the LtP book but not the RRG, as far as I can tell: the one where a ship can only have one title upgrade.

There may well be more, but so far I only ran into that one.

Actually, it's covered in the RRG under the section Unique Names. Basically, any name with a little bullet next to it can only be fielded once in your fleet. That covers ship titles, commanders, named officers, named squadron pilots.

Btw, that includes unique names under different cards. For example, Darth Vader is going to be a commander that comes with the ISD. So you can't have Darth Vader be both a commander and a Tie Advanced squadron leader.

Ah, but that rule only says you can't have more than one copy of a given unique title. What it does not say is that a single ship cannot have more than one (different) title upgrade. The LtP booklet does say that, quite explicitly.

These are not the rules we are looking for...

We'll be moving along to the Rules Reference. You may go, sir.
