Advice for a Shared Army

By Jokubas, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I play this game in a bit of a nonstandard way because my friends and I share my collection. To play, we follow all of the standard squad building rules, but we divide whoever is there into faction teams and each person chooses a ship or two to "pilot." So far it's worked pretty well and people don't often get eliminated too early to be disappointing.

However, the setup has become a nightmare. I bought a bigger case when Scum came out and organized it more efficiently, but I realized the squad building itself was the biggest problem. Having several people, most of which (including myself) honestly don't have that much experience with the game, trying to pick ships and upgrades from a single pool and still trying to keep a balanced point value across teams just doesn't work too well.

Usually we eventually shrug and decide to just go with builds that are obviously suboptimal even to us. It's worked surprisingly well, but it's still time-consuming and at least causes me a lot of stress in hoping that it will result in a reasonably fair game.

So the idea we came up with is to just come with a pre-built list and divide ships up based on who's there (we generally have around 3-6 people). I'm coming here because I'd like some advice on building such a list, since I only have a few games under my belt, and all played like this. For the most part, you can build it like a normal list.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1) We're all still relatively new, so I don't want too many upgrades that lead to too many things to keep track of (we forgot about Veteran Instincts last time, although we need to learn some time so that can be in the list, just keep that in mind), and don't expect us to fly too well.

2) Due to the dividing up ship thing, each faction will probably need at least 3 ships in a build just to make sure there will be enough if more people show (this number could be lower if all three factions were involved, which isn't official but I'd be willing to do).

3) I own these sets (I have one of each, and buying more isn't an option at the moment):

Core Set

A-Wing

HWK-290

Millennium Falcon

Rebel Aces

TIE Phantom

Lambda Shuttle

Most Wanted

M3-A Interceptor

I came up with a 100-point squad for each faction, which you should be able to put together with what you have. Hopefully nothing's too complicated, but I tried to make it so that each player's ship(s) had something interesting they could do.

Edit: I'd just pick two of these squads to face off against each other, rather than having all 3 100 point squads at once. If you want to use all 3 factions, it would probably be better to do it with ~60-65 points on each side.

Assemble a list as a team or select one from a few people and then divide the ships up.

Yeah, I don't really know why I brought that up. Also, we almost certainly would have done less than 100 points for that, but thanks for pointing that out.

Maybe we'll actually be prepared next time. :P

I think that shared fleets are the best way to introduce a group of friends to x wing. My group made the traslation from ww2 dogfight wargames to x wing using my fleet. But if you are young and cash limited to share is a great option. You can try diferent combos, and with time build your own.Fleet piece by piece
