Unofficially Official; SW Armada Wave 1, May 12th

By Enquiringnewt, in Star Wars: Armada

I fall into the same trap upon each release....

Place a large/huge online pre-order. After official release spend a day or two waiting for shipping info and then tracking. Then read about how people have their toys. Get more impatient and drive to FLGS to buy one of everything. Go home to open and get yelled at by wife.

Repeat as needed/when a new wave is released.

Just lmao.... :)

I just placed a large pre-order with a Canadian online store (1 of each ship, 2 of each squadron pack).

I wish I could support my FLGS in this instance, but I'm in Quebec and there's *at least* a 10% price difference on tax alone. Add that to the roughly 15-20% price difference pre-tax and it's a no brainer :P

Same here. Qui est tu? :P

FLGS want us to buy at them in Quebec, but ****, when the final price (taxes and all) are calculated, it ends up being a 25-30% price difference.

Example with the core set:

Online: 99$ CAN (include taxes and shipping!)

FLGS: 125$ CAN (include taxes)

That's just crazy... I don't blame you at all for buying online.

My FLGS options in the US are charging full MSRP of $100 for the Core Set. That's 50% higher than the $67 price you can find everywhere online, and 80% more than the occasional $55 sales there have been.

I love supporting local businesses but that's a pretty giant difference to swallow.

Luckily after checking several of my LGS's I found 3 had discounts on preorders and one of them (A great store own by a great couple that is always great to my son) offered me a 30% discount.

It never hurts to ask your LGS's what they are willing to do.

Generally speaking, I buy almost all large purchases online. I bought core and all of wave 1 from cardhaus. I often buy from coolstuff too.

On occasion, I buy smaller things from local game shop. I've bought a few wings of glory planes, some imperial assault expansion packs, and a few xwing ships.

I rarely play at the local game shop. Most of my gaming is done at someone's home, mine or my friends.

I've asked and here at least, all they have is a 10% discount program that you have to pay $10 to join. I did join, but it's basically just the removal of tax. Sadly, that's nothing like free shipping and a near 30-35% discount from msrp online.

If the local game shop would meet somewhere in between msrp and near online discount, say 20% off from msrp, I'd buy from them. Sadly, the owner is unwilling to budge.

Online stores don't have rent to pay or offer play space. Support your FLGS.

I'll believe it when FFG updates their site. Until then, skepticism is warranted.

I don't trust FFG upcoming page anymore then I trust distributor rumors.

No doubt they'll have a news item when they're ready to announce. At that point, they'll probably also update the upcoming page.

I definitely would support my FLGS and prefer to spend time and money there. I have in the past and will again. But...

I decided to buy one copy of the core set from my FLGS. As I sat in the gaming area, looking through the box contents, I over heard the store owner talking to one of his employees. He was bragging about the markup and how he was happy to take that much money at one time from his pigeons. His tone was snide and condescending.

It will be a cold day in H*** before I buy anything from him again. And I will be more than happy to use up his A/C, lights and gaming space until he closes his doors. I have plenty of room at home to host games once that happens.

The F stands for friendly.

That's a LGS or possibly an AhLGS.

So, I take it that you did not take his use of the word pigeon as a term of endearment.

Obviously not all LGSs are Friendly. I know one in my area - maybe even the one closest to me - which seems very cold and seems to cater more to modelers than to gamers. So, I go to others, and so do my friends.

So, when we talk about the F, we are talking about "Friendly".

I do support mine, taking a 15% discount on my pre-orders, and usually fairly soon after the announcement is made and the MSRP has been determined. (I'm not much of an investor, so my "money working for me" is not much of my opportunity cost calculus.)

In return, I get a great place to meet people and game with them. Thankfully, cars are not always crashing into its front window, do it's a pleasant experience. If it weren't for the FLGSs, I would not have much opportunity to play, because there would be much less of a community to play with.

Now obviously, these decisions get made by individuals on the margin of their purchasing power. If I once decide to go to an online store, it's not going to break the FLGS. But if we make it a culture of individual defection from the common norm of supporting FLGSs, they will dry up and go away.

So, support your FLGS, please. It ain't charity.

I look at the increased MSRP over online as a fee I pay to play at my LGS. So I tend to buy stuff based on how much I've used my LGS. If I seldom if ever make it there, I don't buy much there. If I'm there every other week like I am now I buy more stuff there.

So while I agree people should 'dance with the one that brought you' as it were. This nearly knee jerk 'support your LGS' is just that, a knee jerk reaction and not always appropriate to the person in question.

Well when you can support your local area I am a firm believer it is better for everyone. That said some are not in a good position to do that and I understand. Also most LGS's fall into the FLGS category but those that don't you should not feel bad for not supporting them.

Time will tell what will happen to LGS's but remember if they are not supported some how they will disappear and then you won't have any choices. Also your local community is hurt by this too, a lot of the time it is a small set back but a set back next nonetheless.

Heck look at what happens to small communities that have Wal..... The local economy starts to suffer heavily and many small shops close up while the average pay check goes down, not up.

Not saying that MM or other online stores are Wal..... but if you don't support the LGS's no one will. Basic economics 101.

I will not buy from a store that shows contempt for its customer base. This owner does that.

Having said that, I am from a small town. I prefer small stores where the owner and staff actually know about what they are selling, are friendly and offer good, old fashioned customer service. I go out of my way (defined as spending more, driving to get there, etc etc) to support them in the past and will in the future. I don't even mind the markup too much. It is a business after all.

However, store owners that do not respect and appreciate thier customers, who seem to think customers owe them somthing for gracing them with the opportunity of paying more for less? Well, LGS owners like that can take a long walk out of a short air lock.

Since my buddies LGS closed in 2010 I have bought almost everything online. I recently moved and spent several days driving around on my lunch hour looking at the shops here. I found a couple that were nice and one that offered a decent place to play. I still couldnt make myself shell out the more than 30% markup from what I could get online. I have spent thousands of dollars over the years at LGS's when I had more expendable income, but not anymore.

So while I agree people should 'dance with the one that brought you' as it were. This nearly knee jerk 'support your LGS' is just that, a knee jerk reaction and not always appropriate to the person in question.

Granted and granted.

Because individual situations may vary, anything said here should be applied to the most average situation, not to the outliers. I'm in agreement with Beatty that most LGSs are friendly. And, if we're incorrect, then adding the F to the acronym (which we tend to do) controls for what might be a plethora of sourpuss gaming store operators.

So, with that reiterated preface...

I do think there are some knock-on issues to consider:

The more FLGSs flourish, the more other gamers they can hire to work at their registers and as organized play facilitators. This means two things:

  • Facilitated games are more likely to bring added value to gaming, increasing all of our measures of fun.
  • More gamers have more income to play the games with you, because they will also be buying into the game.
  • More gamers being hired in stores, rather than package handling and fuel oil expenses or big-box stores, etc., means a greater disaggregation of the wealth in our economy and environment (both local and global). That's healthier for our economy as a whole, even if it's just a small part of the whole.

FLGs are also centers of social capital. This is where we meet and interact with new people, rather than gaming within our existing social circle. I've built up a whole new circle of friends since last year, when I started playing X-Wing. Social capital will tend to make us happier, but there are also other knock-on effects.

  • People tend to find opportunities (incl. employment) through their weak ties, rather than their strong ties (Granovetter, 1973). People you meet at FLGSs will tend to be weak ties.
  • We break out of our normal social silos and interact with more people who are less like us. Our present society is very homophilious. We tend to surround ourselves with people who hold similar opinions to ourselves, and thus we create echo chambers. Getting to know one another over our games gives us something in common and the chance to see that people who are not like us and hold different opinions from us, can be wonderful people, and we can learn something from those different points of view.

I could probably go on, but I think my soap box is starting to show signs of wear. ^_^

Point being: FLGSs are great for our society in more ways than we tend to realize. It's worth the investment of the 20-35% that it costs in mark-up.

Sorry kinda new but what is FLGS?

Friendly Local Gaming Store. Support your local hobby store and try to avoid buying online.

If there was a good one that was closer than a 2 hour drive I would :(

This thread (while interesting) is way off topic. Each time I look I hope for more info about Wave 1 releases but its just debating FLAGS :P

Seriously though we won't hear anything more until the 12th most likely.

This. I've been checking the News feed, but I think that FFG has done their two posts for the day.

The unofficial timeline has been given by our "source"... The only official ffg info will be given on the main page.

"This" == I was agreeing with MaverickNZ's sentiment.

FFG updates their News feed 1-2 times a day, so that is likely going to be the first place where official confirmation shows up. It's the big link that says "News" at the top of the page.
